Momma Of Musa recommended this in case I am able to bring in that poor stray that is hanging out on my back porch. Cedric just looks at him now (for the most part; last night he was growling, but I think that was at the possum I saw!), but I thought maybe this stuff might help in a transition. The problem is I have sinus issues. I used to get bad sinus migraines 8-9 times a year. I don't get them often, and not nearly as bad as I used to (2-3 days) as I go to the chiropractor. I am concerned that these plug ins would bother me. Cedric spends most of his time downstairs in the evenings anyway, so one could go there for him, and one in the extra bedroom that I would keep the stray in.

pleae give me your thoughts/2 cents about this product. any thoughts about bringing in a male (about a year old I would guess; he's really skinny but his head is a normal size ie ears not overly large) to another male who is nearly 6. Stray cat seems to be a bit skitish and not aggressive. He lets me pet him and does want to come in. Cedric goes tomorrow to get his Feline Leuk shot tomorrow, and I hope to be able to rescue the stray on Sunday (I work 6am to noon, and hope to grab him in the afternoon if he's around to take to Bainfield Vet at Petsmart).

thanks guys and gals!

Jesse

I have used one, and I was never able to smell any odor or fragrance.

But I don't know what that means is terms of your sinus problems.

I guess you'll just have to try it and see.

Good luck. That little stray kitty needs your help.

I get headaches quite often, some sinus, some migraine some just stress. The feliway diffusers don't bother me. My sister has problems with scents, no candles, no perfume can be around her or she gets headaches. She uses Feliway/Comfort Zone diffusers without issue also.

We got some for Ebony when she first came here, after months in a small cage she terribly mean. Bit me every time I tried to test her. Even went on her back and had all claws out when I tried to give her a shot. Thankfully a wonderful lady sent some through DCIN and within a week Ebony was out of her foster room and with the rest of the kitties. We no longer need it because Ebony is now a hilarious, sweet, wonderful addition to our family, but I think without the Feliway that would have taken a lot longer.

I've found introducing male kitties to be easier than introducing female kitties. I would not bring the stray in until he was tested for FIV/FeLV and fleas/ticks. After that a slow intro and things might be great.

Yep, that's what Mel said too, about the males being easier to introduce of sorts. He can't come in until Cedric gets his shot tomorrow afternoon, and then he isn't coming in until I can get him to the vet. Ideally on Sunday afternoon if I can find him when I get home from the shop. Otherwise, he comes around in the early morning when i am feeding Cedric, ro later after the sun sets. I swept my garage just in case I end up catching him at night; I could then bomb it for fleas (but the water heater is in there, that might make me nervous). With the W/H in there, it gets pretty warm, especially here in FL.

I'll order one - or should I get 2 - one for the new guy and one for Cedric?

I was wondering if I should invest in these as Lil Sista and Civvie Slappy and Sugar Bean MUST meet each other this week end...Lil Sista is tired of being behind the gated door and is now climbing up the gates! and letting the rest of the family know she is NOT happy having to stay in the 'get to know you room'. How long does it take for the scent to be in the room? One for each room? It would be very nice if this would help the stress of the other 2 while they are meeting...Hissing... and learning to LOVE each other!
I guess you can get them at petsmart????

I just ordered them from Drs Foster & Smith. I did get 2 plus refils, for like $67 (free shipping). It would have cost more at PetSmart but since I don't need them right this second...

I didn't think of Amazon, mostly because the stuff I by from them (books) are from their UK site. :-D I ordered 3 books at the beginning of the month, got them quickly and remembered to do it thru the links here so the site is supported.

FYI- there are also calming collars which last one month, same as the plug-ins. At PetSmart there is a brand called Farnum that makes these collars and they are 11.99 on sale. They smell great! Even my vet said something like "he smells so good" - it's made of the pheremone and natural stuff - I think lavender - but it happens to smell great.

Jesse - I too have migraine and sinus problems, but have been using feliway plug ins for years without any issues on my part. I also use the spray from time to time as needed, but I can really notice when the plug in has dried out because we start to have bad behavior from the feline part of the household. I keep extra refills around so we don't have constant hissing fits. I usually buy them when I see a website that has free shipping. Just look around when you need the refills, and good luck!

Thanks for the offer donna. But I can't get Cedric to wear the collar I bought for him - he tries to "back out" of it. It's so cute, it's black and says "Love Me Tender" on it. The charm is Elvis' TCB emblem and I had his name engraved ont he back (we have an engraving machine at the shop). I should have tried to get him to wear it when I first got him...

Thanks again for the offer tho.

Devil's Advocate here...what do you mean "he won't wear it" or "he backs out of it"? Just put the collar on, adjust it so it fits - done. It's on. Merlin doesn't love it either but I don't give him a choice.

Traci & Boomer,
Sounds like Cedric gets his way - just like mine do!
Glad to hear I am not the only one that is wrapped! I was thinking, BEAN - WEAR A COLLAR? NOOOOOO WAY! LOL

I guess I'm "mean". I have always put bandanas and other things on my cats over the years and people who saw them would say "my cats would never wear them" and I thought to myself huh????? Just put it on. They'll struggle for a minute and then forget about it.

I know 2 people who have indoor/outdoor cats who won't put collars on their cats because "they won't wear them" and I think - wouldn't it be safer to have the collar on and let them be uncomfortable for a few minutes getting used to it? I don't get it. confused_cat

Traci,

I was the exact same way until I became a multicat household....every one of the Fur Gang has a collar with a name tag, the sugar cats also have a tag indicating they are diabetic, plus various rabies tags, bells, and in the case of the drooler his dog liscense. The only one here that actually keeps his collar on, is the drooler...Why? Because he hasn't yet dscovered a way to talk the cats into removing it for him. For the longest time, I got up every morning and walked through the house picking up various collars and then searching for the owner of said collars, reattaching them to their respective owners. I even went so far as making sure everyone had a different color collar and tag so I knew who to hunt down just by sight...Finally I gave up, now if for some reason someone is leaving the house, say to go to the vet's then their collar goes on, just in case of carrier escape, but otherwise, they are all microchipped and their beautiful collars remain in a drawer, until it is time to play dress-up to go the doctor's office.

I have seriously tried to collar them all, but finally surrendered to the power of the paw/claw. If they don't remove them themselves then they talk one of their furry brothers or sisters into doing it, and I have better things to do with my day than chase down half a dozen cats to replace collars.

Mel, Maxwell, Musette and the collarless Fur Gang

Mine do have collars/harnesses and tags that are worn for 'dress up' vet appt but they come off when they come back home. Until a few years ago, all mine wore collars with name tags...then came KT. He didn't complain BUT....

on one of his 'kitidiot' runs across the back of the couch in front of the window blind, the collar caught on the blind. The collar jerked him back, flipped it up into his mouth, he's swinging from the string while we're watching in horror. It then came loose, the metal tag and collar were hung in his mouth, he's running for the safety of the 'underbed', hits the edge shoving the tag further into his lips and mouth. I'm chasing him in total panic and can't get to him because of boxes under the bed - all I can see is huge eyes and RED. I'm throwing boxes and crawling like a mad woman while he's digging at his mouth. When I FINALLY get to him, his red tag is hung in his mouth .... but he's OK other than as scared as we were. It could have been HORRIBLE but since then, NO collars on in the house - cats nor droolers. The only big drooler that wears one is in an area that's next to 'out'. All the others must go thru at least 2 gates to get to 'out'.

I do want a 'diabetic' tag for KT's....

Hugs to All!

I just got started using Feliway plugins this last week in hopes it will help with Mittens my-tail-is-pure-evil issues and with Smokey's increasing dislike of the foster being in the house. They've only been going for about 4 days, but I have 3 of them upstairs and I haven't noticed a problem. I get migraines, severe headaches and have cat sinus allergies.

I ordered from here http://entirelypets.ecomm-search.com/se ... liway+cats as their usual price for the refills is 12.99, cheaper if bought 3 packs.

Tracy - some cats don't give up quite so easily. Maybe its because you've had mostly males? We tried to harness our older cats to take them outside. It was never a couple of minutes and they forgot. If we ever put a harness or collar on them, they just lay down and refuse to move until the offending object is gone. If you don't remove it in a timely fashion, they begin working on it themselves, but wouldn't ever move from that spot until you or they had it removed.

I guess i didn't explain it right, but I put the collar around the neck and go to latch it, he starts walking backwards to try to get away from it. Part of that is probably trying to see what it is. It is not a breakaway collar, so it's probably better that he dose not wear it.

Well, I had ordered the plug ins on Thursday before the disaster that was me trying to rescue the outside cat. Do they have experiation dates? I might use one downstairs to see if he stopps trying to see what's under the couch. It doesn't seem to bother the other migraine/sinus sufferes here, which is great to know.

Update

Since I resuced the stray aka Dallas on 9/1, he finally came home fromt he vet on 9/12. he has a tendancy of yowlling alot, and when cjleo spoke with him last night, apparently he is looking for his girlfirends int he neighborhood when he looks out the window. This morning, I opened the sliding glass door to the bakc porch for a few minutes and it looked like he was trying to get out (not after I spent $1450 at the vet's you dont!). I have a plug in downstairs and one in my room where he spends most of his time. Vet estimates him to be 3 and he was not neutered until 9/2/11. do you think the feliway might be aggrivating his "desire" and thus making him "want" his girlfriends?

Well, I don't know about the Feliway, but I do know that a mature male, once
altered, takes 2-3 months for the residual testosterone to leave the body.

Yikes! Well, I guess Cedric and I will be bunking together until Dallas gets his urge out! No wonder he started pawing at the screen door when i opened it. I will be the only person enjoying the back porch when it gets screened in on Monday!

Feliway had no effect on my trigger-happy sinuses, nor the ocular migraines.

Just a thought - if you can, put something like Advantage on the stray, 24-48 hours before bringing him in to kill off fleas.

I also get ocular migraines and have allergy issues, but had the Feliway diffuser in my bedroom with a new cat for months and it was never a medical problem. Good luck!
