Hello everyone,
My diabetic cat Boo is now in remission which is great news! However, the vet suspects my other cat Shady may have hyperthyroidism. I am taking him in on 4/25/2018 for a thyroid panel. Anyone have experience with hyperthyroidism in their kitties?

Paddy was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism about 5 years ago. He was successfully treated with radioiodine and has been fine ever since. Our regular vet referred us to a clinic about 50 miles away and sent his records to them. I took Paddy there on Tuesday and picked him up on Friday. It took about a month for his thyroid symptoms to improve.

Do you recall how much the radioiodine treatment cost?

The treatment itself was about $1000. Then, the tests before and after treatment were another $300 or so. The vet also discussed treating him with tablets, which he would need for the rest of his life. Tablets are cheaper in the short-term but the vet said that iodine would be cheaper over the course of a few years. It's a big expense up front though.

Bella’s sister Abby was diagnosed about a month ago, we tried the pills and her tummy couldn’t do it so we do the transdermal gel on ear.

My parents' furbaby and my old cat brother Maxi (flew over the rainbow bridge 3 years ago at age 16 from a heart attack in his sleep) had to have radioactive treatment at age 8 for thyroid issues.

He was at the specialist vet overnight (I think...or 2 nights) and when he came home, my parents weren't allowed to touch him for 24-48 hours due to the radiation! (I had left home by now so was not around)

It was SO hard for them not to comfort and hold him for that time, but the treatment literally doubled his life. He also had a mild heart murmur which was apparently possibly caused by the thyroid problem.

I think the treatment was around $1,300 and this was over a decade ago (in Australia).

Avery is going for her I-131 treatment next Saturday. I'm in Ontario and the treatment, boarding, and 2 posttreatment T4 checks will be $1450. There's a really helpful Yahoo Group for feline hyperthyroidism that you might want to check out.

I treated my cat with medication daily....it came in pill form but I had them compound it into liquid form and she tolerated it very well for three yrs (she even opened her mouth for me every time because I never once forced it into her mouth but literally talked her into it!!)...
