Is there such a thing as a feline endocrinologist? I have decided that the Internist handling my cat's case does not know much about DM. I had my questions first when he put her into CHF at the first of the year with excess fluids; then she was running high numbers (300s & 400s) for a year before she was diagnosed and put on insulin. Then when he prescribed 4 U of Lantus after only 3 weeks, I really started worrying. This is a Specialties clinic and the doctors are all board certified etc, etc, and supposed to be the best, especially in my state. I don't know what to do. This man is just like family and I don't want to hurt him. But if I could find an endocrinologist in South Carolina, I want to take her there.

There are feline endocrinologists, but I believe they are few and far between. You could perhaps contact Mark Peterson's clinic and see if they could refer you to someone in South Carolina? http://www.animalendocrine.com/contact-us/contact-us/

However, it might be easier to call around to vets and find one that is better educated in Feline Diabetes, or take the initiative to educate your vet. Or you can pick a new vet that is willing to work with you and then you take charge of his treatment plan from the beginning. Feline diabetes is a disease best managed at home with participation from the owner (just like human diabetes), so having you as an active participant in treatment (especially with dosing) is necessary, regardless of how much your vet knows. That said, it is really helpful to have someone on board with your treatment. My current vet didn't start out with all the right treatment recommendations, but I insisted on doing things as I had researched and provided studies and documents for her that showed her I wasn't going off the reservation. She was so pleased with the methods and results we got with Bandit, she and the other vets at the practice changed their treatment recommendations after Bandit went OTJ.

There are board certified internal medicine veterinarians who may specialize in endocrinology ( and have extra training in that area), but there is no board certification for that particular specialty.
Your best bet in finding someone, aside from contacting the vet Julie recommended --- which is an excellent idea--- is to check with a veterinary school near you . I doubt you will find someone outside of that.
You may get lucky and try doing a search for VCIM doc HERE
and calling around, making inquiries as to who may have additional training and/or a special interest in this field.
Good luck !
