Hello,
Could a kitty have diabetes but also have a normal glucose measurement on routine bloodwork? My kitty had bloodwork done on Friday and her glucose was normal (130). Two weeks prior it was 146. However her urine Multistix show large amounts of glucose, she is losing weight and is walking almost on her hocks and sometimes on her wrists. She is 17, has been on prednisolone for 4 years and has chronic pancreatitis. I am curious if this could ve diabetes (I am waiting on the Dr.s reply) or if the bloodwork proves it is not. Thank you for your input!

No, something's not right there

If the blood glucose is below renal threshold (between about 150-250 depending on the cat) then the kidneys are able to handle it and it doesn't spill over into the urine

If there's glucose in the urine, then the blood glucose should be higher than 130 (or 146)

Normally, glucose cycles up and down with insulin.
The vet may have taken a test when the cat was at a lower point.

Thank you both for the reply. I should have added that she does have impaired kidneys - her creat is 3.2 and her BUN is 3.9.

The answer to your question is yes. Depending on when the blood work was drawn in relation to their feeding and or the time of the insulin delivery. Digestion and insulin peak may coincide and you attain the results you are looking for...a normal blood sugar. Isn't that what were all going for...a normal/stable blood sugar. Good luck from Jane and Stewey

I'm sorry, I think I miss communicated at the beginning -- My girl has not been diagnosed with Diabetes. We are running urine today, but her home urine strips are showing glucose, so I wonder if she could have diabetes because of the glucose from the urine, but the blood was normal. Sorry for the confusion!!

The impaired kidney function may be contributing to some of the urine glucose.
