Feeling Stuck

I will get a spreadsheet up soon! I've been recording all my numbers on a physical piece of paper for now. Just need to transfer.

Max is on 4 units of Lantus twice a day (8 units total) and I can't get him anywhere below 300. I seem to get the lowest reading 4-5 hours post-shot and it's usually somewhere in the 300s or 400s. Right before I give him his shot he always reads HI or well into the 500s.

We started him out on 1 unit in October and have increased about one unit a month since then. The next increase will be 5 twice a day, and ten units a day seems kinda crazy.

Will we ever get this cat regulated?

Should I keep experimenting with the high protein/low carb food?

First task is the spreadsheet. You have been increasing by larger amounts than we do here, at Max’s current size of dose. Having said that, some cats need larger doses. Max have any other health issues?

Is that Purina dry food? Low carb wet or raw is best, but transition slowly and monitor/test often when you switch.

A cat needs as much insulin as it needs, don't get freaked by the dose, just look at the numbers. A spreadsheet will make people here more comfortable advising you on the dose. Could you get it set up as soon as possible?

If you've been on 4ui and you're not seeing anything under 300, an increase sounds wise, as long as you are testing sufficiently (this is something that is difficult to evaluate without seeing your spreadsheet; you mention a +4/+5 test, but are you doing other tests during the cycle? Sometimes with Lantus you get low numbers later in the cycle). Here we would recommend a 0.5ui increase rather than a whole unit -- we prefer smaller and more frequent increases. Are you using syringes or the pen? If you are using the pen I would advise you to get U-100 syringes with 0.5 unit markings (like the BD micro-fine 0.3ml +demi -- or equivalent). It will make your life much easier and allow you to dose more precisely.

Hang in there, it will get better. Looking forward to seeing your spreadsheet.
