Taylor just got diagnosed with diabetes. Starting him on insulin Sunday (first day we are home and can watch him). What if we are late in giving him a shot? We both work crazy hours and we are nervous about the 12 hour timetable

There are 4 things you'll need to manage your kitty's diabetes:
- You - without your commitment, the following won't work.
- Low carb over the counter canned or raw diet, such as many Friskies pates. See Cat Info for more info. If already on insulin, you must be home testing before changing the diet.
- A long-lasting insulin such as ProZinc, Lantus, BCP PZI, or Levemir.
- And home blood glucose monitoring with an inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart Relion Confirm or Target Up and Up (the pet ones will break your budget!).

Check around your community for pet sitters and/or vet techs wanting to earn some extra money to help fill in those days when your work schedules don't quite fit well.

Welcome! I know it's really scary, but it'll settle down as you get more comfortable. I cried everyday for a week and even had a couple of anxiety attacks. Truthfully, it's going to be a nasty roller coaster ride for a couple of months, but just keep in touch on this board, keep asking questions and venting. We've all been there and will help in anyway we can. I can suggest that you ask your vet for ProZinc insulin as its dosing schedule is a little more forgiving than the others.

There is a lot to learn to start of with and its all vey overwhelming but you can do it, before you know it you'll be taking BG tests in your sleep . We will be here to help you so please don't hesitate to post with your questions and concerns. You can start preparing Taylor for testing by rubbing the edges of his little ears and telling him what a good boy he is so he gets used to you messing with them.
