Feeling defeated

Tommy is my fur baby. He is 15 and has diabetes. Tommy was my mom’s cat. She used to go to Florida during the winter and I would take Tommy to care for him. Then she decided to stay year round in Florida and asked if I would take him. I said yes. That was five years ago.
Tommy is very independent. It took years for him and I to build a trustful bond. He’s the kind of cat that hates being held and really he hates being touched period.
Now he has diabetes and frankly I’m feeling defeated. It’s only been 3 days now of giving insulin but I basically have to grab him and put him on the washing machine to do it against his will. I have tried everything and he hates everything I’ve tried. I have only been able to test him once and of course I hit the vein. Ugh. His number was 400 at the vet and when I tested him it was 223 so that’s good. He goes in for a curve next week. But now I feel like he hates me because he runs when he sees me. This is a lot but I’m not giving up. Thank you for listening. ❤️

It’s great you started lantus. Testing will get easier. Give a low carb treat after each test. The prick doesn’t hurt them. Many cats run to the testing spot on their own. I used to test in my bathroom sink. It’s important to test before every shot to make sure the bg is at a safe number to shoot. Cats often test higher often at the vet due to stress. When you can set up a spreadsheet. There’s a lot of information on the lantus forum including the two dosing methods we use. Have you recently changed to fancy feast from either dry or high carb food? What dose was he started on? Did he have ketones?
