I took in another homeless cat about 2 weeks ago. His foster mom was giving him dry (blue Buffalo Basic) and 1 can of fancy feast a day. I am trying to get him off the kitty crack and trying to figure out what he should get to eat per day. Right now, he gets about 2 oz in the am and pm, plus 1/4 before I leave for work and before bed. He is about 11ls at last weight.

What are your thoughts? I have been feeding him fancy feast, friskies, wellness, tiki cat and Cats in the kitchen.

How old?
Is he underweight, overweight, or just right?

I put down 4 of the 13 oz Friskies pates morning and night for 15 cats - an average of 3.4 oz per cat per meal. Weights on my cats rance from abou 7 lbs to 13 lbs. Most of the cats are at a good weight.

In January when he was at the Humane Society of Tampa he was listed as 1 year 7 months old and 10.5 lbs. I'd say he's more like 11 lbs at this point, maybe a little more.

read the label and adjust from there............my cats 11 & 16 lbs eat less then what the label says and they graze all day, but always see food left over that I toss out. They seem happy on less of the FF and Friskies

I also free-feed. Mikey (~14 pounds) and Henry (~9 pounds) are both less than 2 years old and go through about 2-4 of the 5.5oz cans of Friskies SD a day. Even though Henry is smaller than Mikey, he's much more active so they end up eating the same amount; some days a little more, some days a little less. I weigh them weekly to make sure they're not gaining or losing weight and just leave out the food all day for them, replenishing as they empty the bowls.

Heres the math

Required calories per day = [13.6 X ideal weight in lbs] + 70

Start there and weigh him once every couple of weeks and adjust accordingly.
