Feeding the morning of Dental care?

Hello,

I've been combing the very helpful dental care threads here, and still have not found my answer.

My beloved diabetic cat Isabella is going in for a couple of extractions early tomorrow. The dental folks just told me that she should fast beginning 8:30pm tonight. When I called the vet, the technician said we should give her her insulin in the morning and a small amount of food. I'm concerned about the contradictory instructions!

I've left a message with my regular vet, but it seems she may not get the message until Monday.

Any advice?

Welcome to FDMB! :smile:

Hmmm...

Whenever any of my cat's has had a general anesthetic the advice has been to feed no later than 9pm the previous evening.
I've been told that giving a cat a drink of water early in the morning is OK but no food (the stomach needs to be empty if possible).

I was also told not to give insulin. Firstly because the cat isn't eating it's normal food (so the insulin dose may be too much). But secondly because the cat's blood glucose level can go down during anesthesia.

Edited to add;
Forgot to say, 'Good Luck' for tomorrow. Sending you 'stree-free dental' vibes!
If Isabella usually eats a particular food you may want to take some of that in for her tomorrow to eat when she comes round. And maybe also take along a T-shirt or something that smells of you, so she can snuggle up to that and feel comforted by it while she's at the clinic.

Dow what the vert doing the dental says. I would call back and specifically ask that question; what doe the vet say.
Vets base their recommendation on the past successful experience. The one vet I go to says you can give 1/2 food and 1/2 insulin the morning of the dental. It also depends upon when the dental will be done, some times it is done early in the morning and sometimes starting at about noon or later.

I was told by my vet that the reason you don't want Kitty eating any food after around 8-9pm the night before is to prevent them from aspirating food while under anesthesia. As to insulin dosage, some people with give a half dose, some people will skip. If this is the first time since diagnosis for Isabella to be going under, I would suggest skipping the dose. Then, in the future if she needs to go under again, you'll have more data on whether or not it's safe to give any insulin.

My Gracie is boarding at the vet overnight and having her dental tomorrow. She'll be fed tonight, and the food picked up at the last rounds of the day. They will check her in the morning to see how her glucose is, give insulin if necessary, and do any other blood work if the vet believes it is necessary.
