Feeding question

Before Jester was diagnosed, he had been eating two cans of Friskies per day - and sometimes more.
His standard weight tends to be about 12-13 pounds (last summer he was about 12.5-ish.)

He was just under 11 when Dx, and has picked up about 2.5 ounces since being on insulin - just over 11 pounds.

So far the most I can get him to eat in a day is around 2.5 cans of FF with a small amount of his favorite Friskies - about a tablespoon or two at the most.

Is he under-eating? Or am I being a nervous mom?
 
With Fancy Feast, I give our sugar cat as much as he will eat. I also supplement with other foods. He gets cooked chicken. And an occasional can of Weruva Cats in the Kitchen (multiple varieties). The Weruva is more expensive, but I think it is worth a treat once in awhile.

What's his favorite Friskies? As long as it's a pate, it's probably under 10% carbs and that's fine for a diabetic!! If he likes it better than the Fancy Feast, there's no reason you can't feed it to him

Sadly, Jester pretty much snubs pate. His favorite is the indoor stuff with the green lids containing rice and gravy - about 22% carbs.

My concern is that he might not be eating enough. That's why I included weight info.

I feel like I'm coaxing him a lot to get more than two can's worth eaten.

And unfortunately I just can't afford to get Jester any expensive treats. Between the cost of his FF and food for my other two cats, cat food could wind up being around $100 a month.

With no current income, that's a problem.

But I'm still trying to figure out if he's eating enough on two plus cans. We go back to the vet on Saturday to see how he's doing.
 
Just from my own experience, I've targeted around 250 calories a day for Maverick, who is around 12 lbs now. I did see a calorie calculator on another thread here, I'll try and find and link for you.

Is it possible he's just naturally eating less because his diabetes is better controlled? We just spent $1000 on tests because basically I panicked over TIGGER'S decreased appetite. Turns out his hunger is controlled compared to his full on unregulated hunger that was ravenous. That plus he's more of a grazer...something I never noticed when he was free feeding dry. The vet recently told me his calorie count per day based on his weight is about 250 calories. He's 12.12 lbs. So depending on which FF it is, 2.5 cans per day seems like enough. My boy is just eating 2 cans and that's sometimes with coaxing.
 
It's the roasted chicken and roasted turkey. Each can is only about 80 calories.

I'm also realizing that he doesn't like the turkey flavor very much. And I just bought two cases of it on Amazon.

You could donate it to a shelter if you don't want to return it.
