We just got a call from our vet --

someone has scheduled euthanasia for a newly recently diagnosed diabetic cat -- he is a sweet ~10 yr old neutered male -- brown and white.

The vet tech called us, since they know we're active on FDMB and just adopted Rusty through DCIN.

The owner made an appt for PTS on Thursday morning.

Charlie is going over the vet's office today with DCIN surrender questions and also will volunteer to meet with the owner if possible to discuss treatment of FD and take away some of the scaries. We have extra meter/test strips/lancets and just got a 5-pack of Levemir so we could share that too.

Apparently the owner is squeamish about injections -- not necessarily a financial problem of being able to afford treatment.

If possible, we'll try to get the owner to come here to FDMB for info and support and try to treat.

Next option is surrender -- the vet tech that called us said she would be willing to help -- Charlie will try to find out what that entails -- is she willing to adopt?? Either way, we will help with advice and can donate supplies -- Charlie is even willing to go to the vet clinic every day to test BG, feed and inject to reduce the boarding fee.

So -- if they can't convince the owner to treat, they will try to convince to rehome / surrender.

What timing though -- Hope and I both adopting FDs from out of state, then having local cats in need show up.

Re: FD being given up in MI - scheduled for PTS on Thurs!

This is terrible.

Can you ask Charlie to let them know that a simple diet change may be all that is necessary. I don't know the cat obviously, but Mr. Darcy was off insulin the very first day I got him. Sometimes just the canned food/raw food switch changes everything.

Re: FD being given up in MI - scheduled for PTS on Thurs!

oh I hope the owner changes their mind! What part of MI is this happening at? I live in the thumb, and would be willing to talk to the owner as well, about fears they may have.

Re: FD being given up in MI - scheduled for PTS on Thurs!

Yes, we'll discuss food if we can talk to the person.

Unfortunately, our vet is not a believer in food change making a difference - at least she does not push the "prescription" food but she doesn't talk about low carb canned food either.

Re: FD being given up in MI - scheduled for PTS on Thurs!

Oh geezzzzzzzz, lousy timing. Please let me know what Charlie finds out and bless him for all he is doing and planning to do. What town is this vet in, Phoebe?

Maybe your vet could call and talk to mine about diet? All 3 of her newly dx'd are in remission....canned food, some Lantus, and WHAM....into remission.

Re: FD being given up in MI - scheduled for PTS on Thurs!

I have placed a courtesy post on DCIN. I am also moving this to Health so that people who are not registered on this Board can read this thread. I will keep a shadow link here.

Re: FD being given up in MI - scheduled for PTS on Thurs!

My vet is located in Farmington Hills, and she says the cat Stanley is also living in Farmington Hills.

He is a front declawed brown tabby with white. FD 3/9/10 diagnosed and is sweet at the vet. He had a dental last year, no other health problems. No DKA or Hypo history.

He is getting 2u BID Lantus and eating W/D dry -- +4 340 BG during a recent vet visit.

The owner is freaked out and the cat is upset - running away and hiding, avoiding shots etc. Owner is upset that quality of life is very bad with the cat so upset (human is very upset too).

He is overweight - 18 pounds, and lives with another cat.

(report from Charlie)

There's always the BREATH advice. The cat is sensing the owner's nervousness. Perhaps if Charlie could demonstrate a calm person giving the cat the needle (with no insulin in it if it's not shot time) and testing it's BG level, the owner will understand the extent to which his/her stress is translating to the cat.

Re: FD being given up in MI - scheduled for PTS on Thurs!

I suggested that Charlie could either go to the owner's home to demo or have the owner come visit us and see our happy & healthy diabetics to see that good quality of life is possible.

So far we are not in direct contact with Stanley's owner yet.

Our vet is Karla Houghton DVM, Carousel Cat Clinic, on Grand River Ave in Farmington Hills, MI. (near junction of I-696/I-96 and I-275/M-5).

We will take a case or so of low carb Fancy Feast to the vet's for him - a complication is that our vet is closed on Wednesdays, so contacts need to be made today -- the owner is bringing in at 7 a.m. on Thursday morning. (surprising that - vet usually opens at 8:15-8:30 for drop offs and 9 a.m. for office hours).

If Stanley is given free roaming access at the clinic, he will be able to get into dry food and treats. So -- for the diet change to work, he will need to stay in a cage or ?????

The vet tech willing to help him has cats at home already - so probably feeds dry food - I haven't checked (at work right now).

ETA: The vet believes she is open-minded about a good diet for diabetics, but this cat is eating W/D dry.

Small world, Phoebe. I know Karla from years back and have to wonder if Sue is still working there as her vet tech. I just may give Karla a call myself nailbite_smile

Okay, I called and Karla was busy but spoke to vet tech. She said Stanley is coming in on Thursday afternoon and nothing more can be done till the owner comes in and they find out if he is willing to relinquish Stanle or if he is definite on following through with the euthanasia. The owner apparently does not want to learn anything, cannot deal with the whole situation, losing battle there.

Oh, God. Please make this owner surrender Stanley! Maybe someone will need to be there when they arrive to plead for Stanley's life. I can't see anyone refusing. Can't the vet say they will take Stanley and "sever" any responsibilty of the previous owner? PTS is like throwing out the trash, and since pets are considered property, legally, can't someone just take him??? And save them the euthanasia fee?

I just don't get it. I just don't. I got Jeddie is a similar situation - although not as dire - and he is one of the sweetest kitties (thanks Hope, Phoebe and Sarah).

Just got a call -- so far the owner is adamant on putting Stanley to sleep. Scheduled for Thursday afternoon

Please keep up the positive thoughts and prayers that the owner will have a change of heart in the next 24 hours

I am hoping that DH Charlie can be there - the vet is closed today so we don't know what time the appt is. I'm hoping to have Charlie take Tiggy or Rusty to show that diabetic kitties can live happy, healthy lives.

I can't miss work tomorrow - I am booked all afternoon with a consultant who has traveled from IL to help me on a project.

The vet tech talked at length with the owner yesterday.
He is concerned that Stanley has been rehomed a few times already and cannot or will not accept that Stanley's quality of life would improve anywhere else. (I guess Stanley and his sibling were the owner's niece's cats)

While the vet tech would love to grab Stanley and take him home, she has to be professional. If the owner is adamant, the vet and tech will send Stanley across the bridge.

This is just heartbreaking... difficult to concentrate on work

Praying that Stanley's bean has a change of heart. Tess started her trial today and it is so heartbreaking to see someone just give up on an innocent animal.
