As the title says, unfortunately we're having to vet search the local area to find one that is a little more up to date on current feline diabetes treatment then our previous. Any information appreciated.

In case no one chimes in, you may find this helpful.

1) See my signature link Vet Interview Topics

2) search Google Maps for "veterinarian near Montgomery, Alabama"

If you put in your specific address, you can see how close they are.

BJM, had already done that and so far the phone calls to all the local vets isn't producing what I'd hoped. Most in this area still state their preferred insulin is Humulin. Found one that used Vetsulin however they didn't like the idea of home monitoring and was wanting the cat in at a Min of weekly for BG tests.

Still searching tho, hopefully we'll find one :YMSIGH:

Hi! I'm in Alabaster so a bit north of you. My parents used Cobbs Ford in Prattville for our dog when I was a kid. No idea how up they are on FD but they were good with the dog for a general vet.

If you wanted to drive all the way up here I could hook you up with my sweet vet but it's a bit of a ways to go. My vet is with Banfield in Petsmart. They were actually super knowledgeable...could check to see of any near you...can't say if they'll be any good but mine was.

Hope it helps!

Rachel, thanks for the info. Still looking and we're going to be checking Prattville vets tomorrow. Called the local Petsmart and they at least use ProZinc, however again, they wanted the cat brought in every week for testing. After today's ordeal at the vet, (numbers jumped almost 150 in an hour from the house to the vet), I don't think weekly trips to a vet just so they can do a BG are the way to go.

I am a little south of you and haven't had a diabetic since we moved back to AL but in researching vets who were current on vaccination protocols and choices in my area, I found the Carmichael Rd Vet Clinic in Montgomery. The vets seemed to be very accommodating. I didn't actually go there, it was all handled via e-mail and mail. Again, not sure about diabetes but hopefully you will find one that knows more or is willing to work with you more soon!

Appreciate the info, but I think we've found our answer. Called The Cobbs Ford Pet Health Center in Prattville, AL. and they wanted to have just a small sit down with just us and hear where we were and what our intentions were before they even asked to see Felix. After the interview we scheduled an appointment for this morning and wow. What a difference in vets from our old one to the new. First, again before even looking at Felix the doctor sat down and looked over all the bloodwork from the previous vet, discussed his history and gave us options and then her preferred treatment. And stated her goal is to get them into remission, not just regulated, which is what we really wanted to hear.

Once it was time to actually look at the cat I was expecting the usual grab out of the carrier, poke, prod, stick, and shove back into the carrier. Couldn't have been more wrong. They opened up his carrier, gave a couple treats and let him come out on his own, then while we were talking some more just let him wander around the exam room checking everything out. They even have a window sill he hopped up on and watched the birds outside. Of course he's a pretty docile kitty around strangers but still all throughout the exam no major headlocks were needed, they were constantly talking to him, petting him, and a few treats here and there pretty well kept him interested in them long enough to get the exam done.

She has a couple additional concerns she tested for. Based on numbers on his blood work she tested him for UTI (just to make sure), and also Hyperthyroidism due to a very slight heart murmur she and another vet both heard. Then sent us home with a script for Lantus with instructions to start it on the next cycle. She was thrilled we were home testing and even stated she wasn't concerned with the human meter being different then one for animals. It's the consistency of the numbers she's wanting to see instead of the roller coaster ups and downs we were getting with the previous insulin.

More to come I'm sure as we start the second round of the "Sugar Dance". At least this time I think the vet and us are listening to the same music. :-D

That is awesome to hear about your vet. I also had to change vets because my old vet was not up-to-date on feline diabetes treatment. I like the new vet now and she is fairly up-to-date, but is willing to learn. I had to convince her the human glucometer was okay to use (and feel like I've finally won that battle). My kitty is on ProZinc but she is willing to prescribe Lantus if I decide to go that route in the future, but Marbles seems to be doing pretty good with ProZinc at this point.

Good luck trying to getting your kitty into remission!!! That is definitely my goal as well. :RAHCAT
