Fancy Feast vs. DM and MD question

I am about to think I am the dumbest, craziest person posting in this forum---or I have the most out of touch vets!

Yesterday, I was talking to my vet about Kitty's eating regiment. I told her I was feeding FF LC and she said I should consider switchingn to DM or MD wed or dry. I told her I had researched it and that the varities of FF I was feeding had 2 to 5 carbs and that the brands she suggested had 8 to 13, and that I was totally against the dry suggestion. Her comment to me, "there are bad and good carbs". Now help me here-- I agree there might be good and bad carbs, but don't all carbs create sugar?

Is there any truth to her comment or am I truly crazy? It is my intention to continue feeding FF--but, just curious if the comments hold any value.

Thanks!

Your vet is not that unusual. I think vets normally get one short workshop on FD and their nutrition class is given by catfood reps.

Purina DM wet isn't an awful food. It has relatively few carbs (7%) but it is liver based and most kitties get tired of it quickly. You can always try a few cans to make your vet happy, and then return because he won't eat it. They can't argue with that.

As far as the dry, you can use Dr. Lisa's arguments about a species appropriate diet and dehydration. (www.catinfo.org)

Hopefully, in this process, your vet will learn some things.

There are good and bad carbs, both in terms of glycemic values (how much they cause the blood sugar to rise) and amount of fiber included. These terms are generally used when discussing carbs for humans. With gluten sensitivity, obviously some carbs are worse than others.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They need low carbs, very few carbs. And personally, I prefer to food that has no gluten in it, so I guess you could say I look for very low carb food that has "good" (no gluten) carbs in it!

Print out a good recent review article on what all cats should be eating, especially diabetics, and take it to your vet. She needs some updating in her knowledge. As Sue suggested, see Dr. Lisa's site at http://catinfo.org for great info.

Let us know how it goes!
