My cat Pete was diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago. I have been reading this site and have gained much valuable information, but it is also very confusing. Pete eats Fancy Feast and I have been reading how important diet is to the management of diabetes. What varieties of Fancy Feast are okay to feed? My vet wanted me to feed him DM, but he has always eaten Fancy Feast and from what I have read here it seems to be okay.

Where can I find the chart the site refers to for feeding low carb food?

Thanks for any help!

I am sure I will have a lot more quetions--Pete has lost a lot of weight and needs to gain some weight.

Any Fancy Feast pate is likely to be safe to feed routinely, though we recommend you only do fish 1 or 2 times a week. Large (old) fish and bottom feeders may have toxins in their fat, which aren't removed during the canning process. Ex PCBs, mercury, and so on (pop over to EPA for guidance to people about eating fish).

Any Fancy Feast with gravy is handy for handling cycles where the glucose goes too low and you need to get some carbs in to nudge it up to a safe level.

Here's the page that lists the specific Fancy Feast flavors that are low carb and grain free: http://felinediabetes.com/glutenfree.htm. Again, you want to limit the fish flavors to just a couple times a week.

Have you thought about using a higher calorie food to get some weight on him in the meantime? Wellness and EVO both make higher calorie foods that are the same or less expensive than Fancy Feast if you buy the big cans. Not that there's anything wrong with Fancy Feast--you just have to feed less of the other two brands for weight gain. If your cat is a gobbler and will eat 2-3 cans of Fancy Feast a day without a problem, then choose whatever you'd like. If he picks at his food and leaves some behind, you might want to try something higher cal.

Don't get the DM. It's a waste of money. It's pretty much the same thing as Special Kitty or Sophistacat except the label is costing you an 80% markup (compare the ingredients). Fancy Feast is a higher quality food because it contains more muscle meat than byproducts (DM, SK, and Sophistacat are all mostly byproducts). You can also get a food that is all muscle meat (no byproducts) for less than what you pay for the DM.

Where do buy the Wellness and Evo brands? And what flavors of those are you allowed to feed?

I believe PetCo carries those brands.

They might be listed on Binky's lists also...check both the "old' and 'new' canned food lists.

Look on the ingredients on the label seek real meat as the first ingredient, few vegetables, NO corn or
wheat products, and you should do well.

my cat went into diet controlled remission pretty much as soon as i switched her to fancy feast. the vet wanted me to feed her their 'veternary exclusive' canned food cos it 'really is a good food' according to her. i started her out on it for a couple weeks and her BG levels were okay, but still not the greatest. it was also expensive and just not convienent for me cos it could only be bought at the vet, and they dont stay open late! vet food is such a crock of sh!t anway.

so after reading here and doing my research, i took the plunge and switched her to FF and immediately saw a change. and i mean like with a day, her BG was going down to normal levels WITHOUT insulin.

i only feed her the pate style ones cos they are the lowest in carbs. she seems to like the chicken one the best.

stick with the fancy feast!

Petco sells Wellness. You can check the Wellness store locator for other stores in your area: http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/store-locator.aspx Most of the regular Wellness canned are ok to feed. Look for the ones that have the yellow grain-free triangle on the label. The chicken/turkey Wellness CORE is low carb. The regular Wellness is on Binky's chart and on this newer chart along with the Wellness CORE.

Here's the Innova EVO store locator: http://wtb.naturapet.com/?new=true Non-chain pet stores and specialty pet boutiques sell this and other higher end brands of food. All of the Innova EVO varieties (the regular cat/kitten one and all of the 95% ones) are low carb.

Definitely put your address in the store locator on the websites to find a store. You'll find that you may have a locally owned pet food store in your area that sells these foods, and it's way cheaper to buy them there vs. a chain store like PetSmart or PetCo. I only pay $1.16 for a 5.5 oz can of Merrick's at my locally owned pet food store, where PetCo sells it for $1.45 a can. EVO was pretty cheap there too--$1.79 for a 13oz can which was cheaper than feeding Fancy Feast.

Thanks so much for the help. I am feeding the Fancy Feast pates, but I am going to buy food today and am going to look into the Evo. Thanks again.

My local PetCo also sells Evo. But yes, visit the sites and plug in your address. I found out my local mom-and-pop store carries EVERYTHING! :)
