I have a question. I copied these from Janet and Binky's list into this message for a reason. Are these the classic ones and are they still okay to feed to my diabetic Roscoe? We are finding that she is beginning to get finiky with some of the Friskees foods and would like to give her a variety. Any advice would be helpful.

The "flaked" and the "chunky" are not the "classics". I am not sure about the ones that say "fillet and ...". There are 10 or 12 different flavors sold at the stores, and all of them say "classics" on the label. Stay away from anything that says "grilled", "with gravy" and "sliced". All of the "classics" are 5% calories from carbs or lower.

the 2 'chunky' flavors are ok for diabetics also. They do have a little higher carbs count - i think 7% if I remember correctly- but they do not have gravy. They are pate style with some big chunks of meat in it - they are good options if you have a kitty that likes chunky food cause you can add water and the pate turns into 'gravy' and then they have the chunks in 'gravy'. Like Carl said the flavors with the lowest carbs are labeled as "classics"

I was just in Walmart looking at the same brand. If you look at the 12 pack it says classic right on the front. It made my day simpler not having to search through all the individual cans. And runs about $6 for the 12 pack of cans.

Great point. The last time I was in Bi-Lo I noticed they sell two different "classic" mixes in the 12 packs. One is 3 different seafood classic flavors, and the other was 3 non-fish classics flavors. Nice thing is that they had a 2 fer sale, Two 12 packs for 10 bucks, and the single cans weren't on sale. I bought four!

My cat is newly diagnosed and his level is down from the 410 - 500 range to mid 300 range in 2 week's time of diet change. This is a very feral cat that I have as a house pet that only allows me to handle him and he has always preferred dry food. The Vet recommended correction via wet food, but was very non specific about type of wet food to feed. He wants to keep him all day to do a curve, but the only way this vet can handle him is if he dons thick leather gloves that reach to his shoulders for protection and through sedation. I do not like to see my cat dangled in the air by the scruff for shots, etc., so I've attempted the curve myself and the cat is reasonably cooperative with me. I'm doing the ear prick and using a meter made for humans (ReliOn Prime version).

I am concerned about the sedation and panicky stress a day long visit will cause my old cat. He is off the dry food now and I finally found a Fancy Feast Medley that he took to; white meat chicken primavera with garden veggies and greens in a classic sauce. The numbers for this food are Protein 10.0%, Fat 2.0%, Fiber 1.5%, Moisture 82.0%, Ash 3.5%, Taurine .05%. If my calculation is correct, the carbs is below 10%, but didn't know how to figure this until I found this forum.

Before finding this forum, I fed this for a week or so and after experimentation found that he also loves the grilled variety in turkey or chicken flavor, then after reading this forum I see and can calculate that the grilled varieties is over 10% carbs; however, the medley in sauce is under 10%. So (deep breath)...

Since I've only seen a marginal decrease in his levels while feeding the grilled variety my question would be: Is the FF Medleys suitable enough to drop the levels further or do I need to starve him out to force him over to the Classic version. He has already lost a lot of weight. Used to be 14 lbs. and is down to 11.5 lbs. and although the vet says he's not too skinny, I don't like feeling every vertebrae in his spine or the bones in his hips.

I don't want to stress this WILD 13 year old into a heart attack with daily insulin shots and terrorizing vet visits and I can't get him to eat the classic versions...yet. Any suggestions and double checking of my calculation for the FF Medleys cat food will be greatly appreciated!

The medleys is considered MC, most range between 12-16% carbs. But he needs eat, so if he'll eat that for now in my opinion it's better than nothing. A couple of the flaked ones I believe are 8/9% carbs but I can't remember which ones.

This list should help, look under the FF section:

Commerical food chart.

This is a 20% carbs food.... I use it when China's numbers are way too low to bring them up

The "Classics" are the ones that are low carb....also there are a couple of "Chunky" that are low carb (Chunky chicken and chunky turkey)

Have you tried any of the Friskies pates? Some cats really like them

If you can home test, there's no reason you need to subject your kitty to the vet visit...Home testing is more accurate anyway since the cat isn't under all the stress of being at the vet

I'm going to try donnalea's recommendation to mix a little pate in with what he likes and gradually reduce the grilled and/or primavera. His favorite as a kitten before he settled into dry food was FF chunky chicken classic. I'm working in that direction. Thank you all for your help!
