Hi,

Can someone please explain to me why the urine output increases?

As I move Lion from 2.25 (which was too high) to a temporary 1.50 his urine output skyrocketed again. I hope to have him at the correct dose soon (so this isn't a dosing question), but I'd really like to understand what causes the urine to increase in cats?

Thank you!!

Increased urine output is a classic symptom of hyperglycemia. The different doses of Lantus you are giving him are not allowing the depot to build, so he's experiencing some pretty high numbers. Getting him on a consistent dose each day will help bring those numbers down and then he will pee less.

When cats are above renal threshold, which is somewhere around 200 but varies depending on your cat, they will have increased urine output. Renal threshold is the point when there is too much glucose in the blood for the kidneys to keep up and process it all properly, so it’s excreted in the urine. The more time your kitty spends in numbers under renal threshold, the less they will pee :cat:

Thank you Sarah! Does the glucose have volume? I am I seeing both regular pee and glucose in the litterbox? In before times it was 1 1/2 brown bags a day. Now its 2 1/2 brown bags a day.

You could be seeing urine with glucose and urine without glucose, it just depends on his blood sugar. The glucose will be in the urine, not separate. The kidneys will drag extra fluids from the body to help get rid of glucose, which is why diabetic cats can sometimes be dehydrated and also why you see increased drinking. Glucose takes time to build up in the body before it’s excreted in the urine, so it’s going to be influenced by what his BG was a little bit prior to when he peed. The urine with glucose definitely has a smell to it. When Sophie had diabetes the first time and was spending a lot of time in higher numbers, her pee had a weird smell to it for sure.

Thank you so much!, that makes a lot of sense. I will keep his water bowl fresh as we get through the next period of time.

Hopefully he will start seeing some more of those blues and greens again soon and then you won’t have to work so hard on litterbox duty :p But until then yes, definitely a good idea to make sure he has lots of water available!
