Hi new member here. My 13 yr old cat was diagnosed with diabetes 5 days ago. Big Cat is not a fan of the vet's office. At home, he is a lap kitty & loves baby talk, but at the clinic he is a wild animal, bites, growls & scares even me. My vet's office does not want him brought in for proper regulating. They say we will have to rely on my home observations. They have instructed me to give 2 units of insulin once a day. I have not noticed any improvement. Big Cat still drinks a lot, has sugary urine and is lethargic. I should mention, this came on fast. I know it must have been going on for awhile for the diabetes to have progressed, but I didn't see the signs. Five weeks ago I thought the litter I was using had changed formulas because all of a sudden it was just like clay, Three weeks ago his gate was different, 2 weeks ago he started walking on his hocks. He takes 6-7 steps and has to lay down. I don't think the instructed dosage is adequate and because of the vets fear of my cat, I don't feel Big Cat will get the treatment he needs. I am looking for any suggestions for a new vet that can handle a scared crazy acting cat in the Valparaiso Indiana area, please.

Hi,
I used to live in Valparaiso and we had good luck with Dr. Nicholas Pappas in Portage (at least that's where he used to be). We haven't lived there for over 10 years but believe he's still practicing. He treated our diabetic cat Boo. Hope you find someone you can really trust. He might be worth a call :-) When we knew him he had several cats of his own and seemed very knowledgeable about cats.

Thank you Christi. We are going to conduct some impromptu interviews this weekend. We will definitely look up Dr. Pappas. :-D

See my signature link Vet Inteview Topics for questions to ask.

What insulin and dose are you giving?

Are you home blood glucose testing? We strongly advocate this to help keep your cat safe.

How about urine testing for ketones & glucose? Ketones can indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially fatal, expensive to treat, complication of diabetes.
