I switched Pumba and Larry over to EVO canned nearly exclusively (other than Stella & Chewy's freeze dried raw and some home cooked chicken) and boy, does their poop stink now, and Larry is going to have his name changed to Pumbaa-deux due to flatulence!

It's the guar gum. This is from the catinfo.org website: "Guar gum is fermented into some pretty stinky gases by the bacteria in the colon." But then later, it was stated, "I have been using guar gum for 3 months as noted above and the smell of my cats' feces is not as bad as it was when I first started using it and the gas production has subsided significantly."

I have to scoop the litter box several times each day, now, not just so I don't have to smell the stench, but also to prevent Beck from being attracted to the litter box for some great, stinky treats! ohmygod_smile

This problem is compounded by the fact that Beck doesn't always finish her food in the morning, and in the old days (pre FD), I would just leave her leftover salmon and sweet potato kibble out for her to come back and eat when she was hungry. Now I have to hide Beck's leftovers in the oven so the cats won't eat it. I offer it to Beck several times over the course of the day, but I haven't taught her to tap on the oven when she wants her leftover food. If she's hungry, she is drawn to the stinky litter box now, if I don't scoop it after one of the boys takes a stinky dump.

Ain't life fun? haha_smiley

With a clothespin on my nose! *LOLOLOL*

BTW, the litter box has a lock-on privacy top, and it's wedged between a closet door and a heavy piece of furniture, with the entryway facing the wall, but when Beck is determined she somehow manages to move it enough with her snout to grab some stinky treats! Border Collies...too smart for their owner's good.

My sister had a border collie mix (American & Australian apparently). Sookie was hit by a car about 14 months ago.
Does your dog have a raised feeder? One that is high enough that the cats can't reach? If not, you might want to consider it. Both my cats have feeders (the wrought iron kind) as it raises the bowls "up" so they aren't stooping.

Poor Sookie! So sorry to hear that.

No, Beck doesn't have a raised feeder. That might be a good idea but I'm afraid that the cats would just jump up and land in the bowl to snarf to their heart's content. *LOL*

I mentioned this in the other thread, but the high fat content in EVO led to some gastrointestinal upset in Bandit and caused runny, stinky poos. The problem disappeared after I switched him to a lower fat food.

Julia, I am so glad that you warned me about the problems with the high fat content. Not just in EVO but in lots of the canned foods that are extremely low in carbs. None of us need to be adding another health issue in our quest for a high-protein/low-carb diet FD kitties.

I wish you would have given me your cat food lecture years ago! Is this lecture something that we can share a link to on the web, like in video format on YouTube? If not, it needs to be so that I can share it with all of the cat owners I know who feed their cats some canned in the morning, and then dry the rest of the day, as I did.

Anyway, if you don't have this lecture in video format, do create it, and, if you need me to, I will edit it and get it posted!

Thank you SO much for your help! :YMHUG:
