Sorry to not be around. I came home to my very first "Internet Service Outage". No clue why, but no internet since early this afternoon. It just came back 10 minutes ago, right when I have to go to sleep to manage 6 hours in dreamland before the alarm from hell goes off at 4:30 am...

And, today, I had another "Mullet Crisis"!!! I came home for lunch, to find a big huge puddle of liqui-poo in the middle of the kitchen floor. Another in the LB. Never seen anything like it, and I've had probably 20 cats in my lifetime. And stink???? OMG.... I skipped lunch. After the mess was cleaned, I realized I had no idea which of the two boys had done the deed. They both looked okay. Checked back ends, and no evidence evident.... Came home at 3ish to another batch in the LB. Walked around the house and found a plastic bag of dark chocolate pieces that I had forgotten to put away last night and sure enough, it had been chewed through by someone, and there were 3 half eaten discs of chocolate on the floor next to the table...... I'm guessing maybe 1/2 ounce of dark chocolate had been consumed by one or both of the brats. Now I'm freaked....chocolate is poison to cats! So I hop on the computer to google it.....no freaking signal!!!! Son of a b**CH!!!! I have to walk up the road to find a cell signal, I google it, and yeah, not a good thing. Forget the fact that right then it decides to rain. So I call the vet, and wait an hour for them to call me back. Both cats are looking fine, so I feed them dinner. Both eat okay. FINALLY the phone rings, and the vet and I chat for a few minutes. She asks if there's any vomiting going on, but no, there isn't. Just then, Mullet goes into the LB and voila! I've found my chocolate lover!!! Really obvious. Bob walks by, stops, seems to say "WTF is that SMELL?????" and runs away. Mullet just looks sad, like he's sorry, but he can't help it. The vet tells me to keep an eye out for puking, and if so, to the vet we go. So far, so good. No more trips to the LB for Mullet, and Bob decided that wasn't his favorite LB anymore after all, so he's been using one of the other three (actually all of the other three because as far as Bob is concerned, they are all his property, not Mullet's).

So, what did Carl learn today..... a few things....
1 - don't leave a bag of chocolate out, ever! Mullet will eat anything he can fit in his mouth. He eats grits for godsake.
2 - consumed in small quantities, chocolate won't kill, but will cause projectile pooping.
3 - dark chocolate is worse for kitties than milk chocolate, semi-sweet even worse, but baker's chocolate is by far the worst. Mullet's choice, luckily, was sweetened dark chocolate, a little less toxic than semi-sweet.
4 - Not having internet service when you need it is really a stress causing event.

But most interestingly, and I found this out when reading that dogs are more likely to suffer from eating chocolate (dogs just eat it more, but it is more deadly to a cat than a dog) -
cats' tongues do not have the ability to taste "sweet". Dog's do.
Nope, kitty can't tell a candy cane from a french fry. So, if your sugarcat insists on eating sweet junk, it isn't because they like the way "sweet" tastes. Apparently, they instinctively know what to eat that will most make you likely to melt down and have a prissy emergency. I guess they just find that "fun".

On a bright note. When I wasn't sure which kitty had consumed the chocolate, I grabbed the meter. As soon as Bob saw what I was doing, he came running over and head-butted my hand. Poor guy missed the ritual. I was horrified when I turned the meter on to find that the last time I tested him was on January 9th (50). Here's funny.... it took me 6 pokes with a 33 gauge lancet, and four strips, till I got a good test in. Had to try both ears too. Waaaay out of practice. Beep....88. I am writing it off as bean-induced stress. He looked at me like "wow, you really suck at this". Worst part, I had no fresh shrimp treat to offer. He still hasn't forgiven me.

Oh, goodness, sounds like you had a rough day! Hopefully your kitty will be just fine... it sounds like he's going to be. What a little rascal, getting into the chocolate. It's funny how some kitties find a way to get into anything and others wouldn't bother something if you set it down in front of their nose. I have both types of cats. Hope yours and your kitty's night gets better!

Carl, oh my what a stressful day! I would have been so freaked out too.
Poor Mullet maybe he has learned his lesson to not eat chocolate. I am sure Bob was telling him the whole time he better not eat the chocolate. nailbite_smile You know Bob was saying "I told you so" while he was in his box. See I told you Mullet that's what you get for eating daddy's candy!

Sorry your day was crappy! Tomorrow will be better.

Wow! What an experience Carl. Sounds like mullet keeps you hopping! Glad it turned out ok. Never heard of a cat eating chocolate. Very interesting. The worst thing my dog ever ate when she was a puppy was a whole batch of choc. chip cookies(24) my daughter and I just made. She was going to the bathroom a lot that day, but no harm done.

Hope your day tomorrow is a better one.

Oh, Carl - when I read the part about eating the chocolate my heart began racing because I always caution my kids about chocolate and the cats. Jessica left a bag of Kisses unattended tonight and I was so afraid they wouldn't be there when she returned. I'm soooo glad to hear Mullet is okay!! Sounds like someone needs to make sure to bring home treats tomorrow night or someone might be in the doghouse

Oh dear! That is NOT something I would care to walk in on :!: I hope Mullet is doing better today.

Thanks for asking, and yes, Mullet is doing much better today. :-D No vomiting ever happened, and he's eating normally. And best of all, no repeat performances of yesterday's antics. I think he got it all out of his system yesterday, because so far today, no deposits in the LB.

The chocolate is in the fridge where it belongs too! Didn't get a chance to run out to the docks and pick up any shrimp, so Bob was pacified with freeze dried and he's somewhat over it!

I was tempted to check, but needed backup if I was going to try to ear-poke Mullet. Never tried it. It could have been ugly. Both the BG and the test!

LOL, that's the creative writer in me trying to express itself.

Why is it that you can have something in a dish & they never touch it, but inadvertently leave a bag of the same thing around, and it's fodder!

I know the feeling about cleaning vs. eating lunch. Fortunately I had my b'fast before walking into the laundry room and learning that Grayson wasn't the only one who's stomach didn't like FF Beef! I feel your pain! I've also seen the WTH?!!! look on the other cats' faces.

My dog Murphy, as a puppy, ate 1/2 bag of Hershey Kisses - foil & all. Boing! Boing! Boing! Vet said to keep her confined. ;-) As they say, "This too shall pass!"

Glad Mullet AND Bob are doing well today! Great storytelling skills!

What a stressful day! Glad everything is OK...... Sure loved your story and I got a laugh too....sounds like my house some days.

Miss seeing you on Community....you should put this over there where they need a good story!

I just posted it on Community, Gail. Thanks for asking!

Lovely projectile diarrhea story...something you can tell the grandkids someday! I feel your pain. I have an IBD kitty...and since he wasn't kind enough to remind of that smell today...at least you were thinking of me.

I'm guessing that pun wasn't intended?

I'm so glad everything is OK Carl. Wow, what a day you had. Very good info to know about chocolate! I didnt realize there was a difference in the varieties.

As always, informative while entertaining! Sorry to hear of the experience, though, and glad everyone is doing well in spite of the chocolate intake and outcome. :-D
