Sorry to not be around. I came home to my very first "Internet Service Outage". No clue why, but no internet since early this afternoon. It just came back 10 minutes ago, right when I have to go to sleep to manage 6 hours in dreamland before the alarm from hell goes off at 4:30 am...
And, today, I had another "Mullet Crisis"!!! I came home for lunch, to find a big huge puddle of liqui-poo in the middle of the kitchen floor. Another in the LB. Never seen anything like it, and I've had probably 20 cats in my lifetime. And stink???? OMG.... I skipped lunch. After the mess was cleaned, I realized I had no idea which of the two boys had done the deed. They both looked okay. Checked back ends, and no evidence evident.... Came home at 3ish to another batch in the LB. Walked around the house and found a plastic bag of dark chocolate pieces that I had forgotten to put away last night and sure enough, it had been chewed through by someone, and there were 3 half eaten discs of chocolate on the floor next to the table...... I'm guessing maybe 1/2 ounce of dark chocolate had been consumed by one or both of the brats. Now I'm freaked....chocolate is poison to cats! So I hop on the computer to google it.....no freaking signal!!!! Son of a b**CH!!!! I have to walk up the road to find a cell signal, I google it, and yeah, not a good thing. Forget the fact that right then it decides to rain. So I call the vet, and wait an hour for them to call me back. Both cats are looking fine, so I feed them dinner. Both eat okay. FINALLY the phone rings, and the vet and I chat for a few minutes. She asks if there's any vomiting going on, but no, there isn't. Just then, Mullet goes into the LB and voila! I've found my chocolate lover!!! Really obvious. Bob walks by, stops, seems to say "WTF is that SMELL?????" and runs away. Mullet just looks sad, like he's sorry, but he can't help it. The vet tells me to keep an eye out for puking, and if so, to the vet we go. So far, so good. No more trips to the LB for Mullet, and Bob decided that wasn't his favorite LB anymore after all, so he's been using one of the other three (actually all of the other three because as far as Bob is concerned, they are all his property, not Mullet's).
So, what did Carl learn today..... a few things....
1 - don't leave a bag of chocolate out, ever! Mullet will eat anything he can fit in his mouth. He eats grits for godsake.
2 - consumed in small quantities, chocolate won't kill, but will cause projectile pooping.
3 - dark chocolate is worse for kitties than milk chocolate, semi-sweet even worse, but baker's chocolate is by far the worst. Mullet's choice, luckily, was sweetened dark chocolate, a little less toxic than semi-sweet.
4 - Not having internet service when you need it is really a stress causing event.
But most interestingly, and I found this out when reading that dogs are more likely to suffer from eating chocolate (dogs just eat it more, but it is more deadly to a cat than a dog) -
cats' tongues do not have the ability to taste "sweet". Dog's do.
Nope, kitty can't tell a candy cane from a french fry. So, if your sugarcat insists on eating sweet junk, it isn't because they like the way "sweet" tastes. Apparently, they instinctively know what to eat that will most make you likely to melt down and have a prissy emergency. I guess they just find that "fun".
On a bright note. When I wasn't sure which kitty had consumed the chocolate, I grabbed the meter. As soon as Bob saw what I was doing, he came running over and head-butted my hand. Poor guy missed the ritual. I was horrified when I turned the meter on to find that the last time I tested him was on January 9th (50). Here's funny.... it took me 6 pokes with a 33 gauge lancet, and four strips, till I got a good test in. Had to try both ears too. Waaaay out of practice. Beep....88. I am writing it off as bean-induced stress. He looked at me like "wow, you really suck at this". Worst part, I had no fresh shrimp treat to offer. He still hasn't forgiven me.
