Hi,
I haven't been here in a loooong time. My (now) 15 year old Russian Blue Eukanubo has had a very good year, has been in his second remission since April 2012 and the last few months, he's been fantastic, he even started to play again, very perky and as active as can be expected for his age. He is still thin but his appetite is very good. He eats about 3 cans of Fancy Feast Chicken classic a day, I try to vary it but he is quite finicky, and his weight has been around 10 pounds. The question I have is that now I need to prepare for his developing kidney issues, as recently his urine specific gravity indicates dilution and his creatinine/protein ratio has been off, so I'll need to take him to the vet this Friday for bloodwork. I'm expecting that he would most likely have some degree of kidney disease, most likely from his diabetes, and I think he'll require at least a diet change. Does anybody know or have information regarding renal diets and how this could affect his sugar? Also, since he's been in remission, is there any kind of dry food that would be suitable for both diabetes and renal disease? The reason that I'm interested in the dry food (I know, it's not good for diabetes, but hear me out) is that my other cat Molly can't seem to tolerate wet food as she constantly throws it up and it's messy to clean up, she does better with dry food, and Euk will definitely LOVE to eat dry food again, right now it's a struggle to prevent him from getting to her food. Any thoughts, advise, or expertise?

Thanks!

Hi havn't seen you here in forever. I'm glad to see you are both doing well.

Personally I wouldn't jeopardize Eukanubo's remission with dry food, you worked too hard for it to give it up now. I remember when you were contemplating PTS because he wasn't responding but then he turned the corner and went OTJ. I was soooooo happy for you both.

The easy answer to wet food for both FD and CRF that I have found was Wellness Canned Chicken & Turkey or EVO 95% Chicken & Turkey. They are both low in carbs and phospheros. There aren't too many out there. If he doesn't have to worry about the phospherous for now check out Dr. Lisa's list.

Good luck and stay in touch.

Thanks for the responses. I had blood work done on friday, I just got the results, the vet said his BUN was elevated -didn't say how much) and his creatinine was at the high end of normal at 2.3 and normal is up to 2.4, so her take was that he is on very early renal insufficiency and that his diet needed to be changed, as I was expecting. She mentioned Science Diet KD and Royal Canine, both wet, any comments on either of these?
Thanks!
