My cat jumped into the garbage and ate a can of fancy feast that was his sister's. I now have no idea how much insulin to give him. He's on 4 Units, and W/D dry food. Please help!

Don't increase the dose.

Provided he eats the normal amount of his regular w/d food prior to his next meal it should be OK to give him his normal insulin dose. If he doesn't eat as much post for further advice and edit the title of this thread (see Thread Tools at top) to include the words 'Dosing Advice Needed ASAP'. I'm not well so I can't stay with you right now. :(

Does your vet have an out of hours emergency number? It might be a good idea for you to ring for advice.

Well, first of all, don't panic. :) I have had similar situations happen with my kitty. I'm not certain about this but I believe you probably need to give your kitty his regular dose. What kind of insulin are you using and do you know what his BG was before he ate? Also, what kind of FF was it? Several of them are very low in carbs so it might not have raised his BG appreciably. If you can answer any of these questions it will be easier for members to give you more helpful answers.

Lantus, classics chicken and beef, I don't know how to or have the tools to home test yet, plus my cat is slightly psychotic, so testing might be out.

Okay, I don't know anything about Lantus but let's try to find someone who does. Mogs@Critter Mom, I know you need to get some rest, can you recommend someone else with Lantus experience?

Weigh the kibble before putting it down and weigh it after he finishes to make sure he has eaten enough. It's good that he's on Lantus. It would be a bigger issue on one of the harsher insulins.

I've got to sign off now, Lucy; I'm shattered. If there's any additional worry and you don't get answers here then try posting for help on the Lantus ISG board.

just gave the current dose. I didn't want to go to far off his schedule. Should I give him kibble?

It's usually recommended to give food prior to the insulin. How much FF did he eat? Had he already been given his kibble? I'm confused about the timeline.

He's eating his kibble and I'm eating a granogla bar and chugging soy milk. Thank you all for your help. Should I stay awake to moniter him?

This is the tricky bit. If he's too full on low carb food and can't eat enough w/d he may actually end up with not enough of a carb load for his current dose of insulin.

Both of these are excellent pieces of advice! Glad he's eating, does it seem like he will eat his usual amount?

Lol, that's a good thing. :) So, to get this straight in my own head: he sneaked the FF, then he got his insulin, and then he ate his kibble, is this correct? I mean, aside from the stolen FF everything else was on schedule, more or less?

Yes. I found him sitting in my garbage can when I went to start getting his food ready. I laughed hysterically at the sheer absurdity of it before freaking out and posting here.

Sounds like Peaches is quite a character, lol! Cute, too!

If he ate all his kibble and everything was pretty much on the same schedule as usual, I would think he'll probably be okay. I'm still new here myself so I can really only give you my best guess, I don't have as much experience as lots of the other folks on here. I f Peaches were mine, I might sit up with him for a while, or set an alarm to check on him once or twice through the night, just to make sure. Were you able to get in contact with your vet?

I tried, they didn't have an emergency line, and when I called the emergency vet they told me they couldn't help me without seeing Pitch first. Liability bs I guess...

Yeah, been there, done that, myself. Well, my best advice is to stay up with him for a while if you can, and/or set your alarm to check on him, but I do think he's probably going to be fine. You could try posting your situation on the Lantus board, there are probably a lot of members there who can give you more knowledgeable advice than I can.
