Eliz! Update on kitties please...

Aw, bless you both....

Bertie has deteriorated a bit though the day. He had been doing better but now seems to have gone backwards a bit.... :(
I'm now feeding him whatever he will eat, even if that's higher carb, and am upping his insulin accordingly....

The other 2 oldies are doing OK (no deterioration, thank goodness (touch wood/anti-jinx)). Still eating. But feeling very sorry for themselves. And they're still coughing intermittently and gagging, as though they're trying to get something out of their throats. The 2 youngsters are doing likewise, but have a much stronger constitution than the oldies. All five are very quiet and trying to sleep as much as possible.

I've never had to deal with several cats being sick at once. And I confess that I'm finding it quite hard going....especially since I'm not well myself....

The foster kitty, Jasmine, is bright as a button. And, unfortunately, she's bullying a couple of those who aren't well. (Grrrr... Naughty little madam....)...

I'm really hoping that there is some improvement by tomorrow...

Awwwwww ((((((((Eliz))))))) we are all rooting for you and the kitties every minute of the day and so hoping that you will be able to paint a brighter picture soon. I suppose these things just have to take their course and try to take heart from the fact that the kitties themselves are following their instincts and sleeping a lot... sleep is a great restorer so the more they can get, the better - and while they're asleep they're not feeling sorry for themselves, poor little babies.

Maybe Bertie is rather weary - not sure what to suggest other than some new/different treats, perhaps, to perk him up a bit?

I know this is a lot for you to handle so please give yourself some treats as well, whatever they may be (eg this is not a time to refuse chocolate or wine). And get as much sleep as you can yourself, too. Would you like me to pop down? I'm guessing that you won't want to go far if out at all at present, but if you'd like a bit of different company for an hour or so please just say...just a very informal cup of tea sort of thing... Just let me know.

Keep going, Eliz. This too will pass.

Hugs

Aw, bless you all...
Bertie is still quite poorly. Has been ill for about 9 days now. He is very 'up and down'. Seems to rally and then sinks again...
I'm giving him taurine and L-lysine. (After doing some reading online I've just upped his L-lysine to 500mg twice a day.) And Mogs @Critter Mom , I did seriously consider your suggestion of B12 also (my hand hovered over the B12 container, literally...) but in the end I didn't give it for fear that he might have some kind of cancer brewing in his body...

There is sign of improvement in the other kitties. Hurrah! (Touch wood/anti-jinx).
The 2 youngters are still coughing/gagging occasionally, but seem to be a lot stronger. They're back to playing and doing normal young cat stuff.
The 2 oldies, Sophie and Jonesy, also seem a bit stronger. And their appetites have improved which is a huge help. (So much of my time had been taken up with trying to persuade them to eat.) Sophie isn't up to washing herself much so I'm cleaning her every day with pet wipes which, thankfully, she actually seems to like. And they make her smell of coconut which is a vast improvement ;).

Thank you all for your kindness. It's very touching.

Hugs to you all,

Eliz

PS. Going back to bed now with hot orange juice and Manuka honey, in hopes that my own virus will soon subside!

Well, very relieved to see that things are going in the right direction, Eliz... Hopefully all, including Bertie, will shake this off soon.
I'm sure it's affected you in various ways so I'm glad you're looking after yourself. Think I'd be inclined to go for a hot chocolate too! Do please take care and let me know if you need anything...
Hugs

Very relieved to hear from you in the Shire, too.

It's very good to hear that recoveries are under way. I think it's significant that the younger the kitty, the faster the improvement seems to be. Fingers and paws crossed that Bertie is just being a slowcoach recovery-wise because of his maturity. I wonder whether some Liquivite might help him? It really gave Saoirse a boost when she was very poorly last year.

I know only too well how utterly draining it is trying to get food into inappetent cats. I'm glad to hear that you're going to get some rest this morning, Eliz. :bighug:

So happy to hear there's been some improvements. Like Mogs said, Bertie is probably just a little slower recovering than the youngsters. It's hard enough nursing sick fur kids at the best of times but when you are under the weather too, it's really tough! You look after yourself too! :bighug::bighug:

Hi Mogs,
There is definitely improvement in all 5 kitties. Appetites have picked up enormously. That's such a relief. (I was really struggling to be honest.... :arghh: )
There's still some coughing/gagging, but that has diminished a lot.

Bertie is lagging behind the others somewhat. He's certainly stronger, but he's still not 'himself'.

And I think his eyesight has deteriorated very recently which is making life a little bit harder for him.
He's had cataracts for a long time. The vet thinks he may have suffered eye damage in infancy (a neighbour of ours rescued Bertie from a farm rubbish heap along with some other young kittens; they all had cat flu and had been dumped there to die.... Grrrrrr! Some kittens did die. One recovered but had brain damage. Bertie was one of the stronger survivors.)
He's completely deaf too, poor boy.... I fear that his world is becoming very, very small.... :(

Thanks so much for your concern.:bighug:

Awww ... poor Bertie. I know that feeling very well myself; it's not great. :(

:bighug: (Bertie) :bighug:

I had a feeling it was hard going for you, Eliz. Having one poorly kitty is very tough; being poorly yourself and having multiple kitty patients must have been a real struggle.

I am pleased and relieved that your brood are responding well to your love and care. I hope you're managing to take care of yourself a little, too. After such a traumatic start to life, I'm very glad that Bertie has such a loving and caring kitty mama; he couldn't wish for anyone better. :)

Eliz, you're a pillar of strength. I'm sure the kitties couldn't be in better hands. You must just be sure to look after yourself properly too... We all know how easy it is to put yourself last but at times like this especially when the others are really relying on you, you must stay fit and healthy.
I will see you soon.
