Effects of Microchip?

I probably don't have the topic quite the way I wanted it....

I elected to microchip cedric in april when he went in for his dental. A week before he had his regular check up, and since the doc wanted to do a dental, I told them to do the chip then.
Dallas is next. I was planning the same thing - when he goes in for his annual check up etc in September, if the vet says a dental is needed, they can chip him when he's out from the anesthesia.
My vet is having a 1/2 off special on microchipping this month (they posted this on the FB page). After having spent about $1000 since April on their vet bills, I thought this might be a good idea to do now rather than wait until later.

SO....my question is for those of you who have had your cats microchipped, how do you think it has effected your cat? I understand that a bigger needle is used and is rather painless? Since Cedric had this done when he was under anesthsia, etc, I don't know how the skitish guy will take it. I know I am being a worry wart, but since Dallas has gone to the vet a bit frequently lately (he had some kind of bacteria in his ears, so he went twice for that and they he got sick in mid-May and was back for a look-see regarding that - I was so sure he ate something that was blocking him up) I don't want him upset. When we were going to the vet all 3 times he was in what I call panic attack mode. He was very stressed in the carrier, but was good when we were there (shaking but not hissing and growling like Cedric does). He is the neighborhood stray cat that I took in last year since he was in need of medical attention (he had a bad hematoma in one ear) and he's a bit skitish. When I was talking with my annimal communicator last week she pointed out that we don't know details as to what his life was really like before he came in to live with us (the first time she spoke to him he told her that his family left him).

So is this supposed to be some kind of little pinch that he'll forget about in 5 minutes and I am being a worry wart? It would be best if they could sell the darn thing to me at 1/2 price now and put it in when we go in September! Did I metnion it's about a 20 mile ride to get there?! ;-) I do love them though.

thanks for your thoughts!

I had Erik and Emme chipped without any anesthesia. I was kind of freaked when I saw the needle - it seems large. But they had no problems with it at all. In fact, it was less traumatic for them than their regular exam, especially the dreaded "taking of the temperature". And it takes literally a couple of seconds for them to insert it.

It depends of how freaked you think he'd get to know it is worth it to make an extra trip. But I'd take advantage of the sale!

Zeus was chipped right at the humane society the day that I adopted him - no anesthesia, only took a couple of seconds. I didn't see the needle though, they took him into a different room to do that and clean his ears while I was completing the paperwork. He was fine right afterwards though. As I recall, it wasn't very much money to have it done - but if you can have it done while it's "on sale" that's even better.

Good luck

i don't recall the size of the syringe used to insert the chip but the chips are minute. none of mine have ever been anesthetized for a microchip. it's done and overwith as fast as an insulin shot is

I had both my cats micro-chipped, and although I didn't hear a peep from either one, I did turn my head.
I don't think it hurt them much at all, and it was very quick.

The needle diameter is probably around 20 gauge + or - 2; the chip is slightly larger than a grain of unhulled rice.

I've help chip several cats as a volunteer and part time worker (in the past) at our local shelter. Some cats feel a bit sensitive in the neck afterwards, but not for long. They don't seem to notice the shot itself much.

Thanks for all your comments. While I adopted Cedric from the SPCA in 2006, they didn't chip him (not sure if they do that automatically now; they did neuter him however). Since Dallas was dumped by his family in the nieghborhood, he went 3 years on the "prowl" and has been wanting "out" all week. He's not getting out! He gets anxious in the car on the way to the vet - the only times he has been in the car are to go there - he yowls and pants. I got a nylon carrier for him since he rubbed the skin off his nose in the plastic carrier I already have last year when I caught him. He is a good boy when being examined, but it could be he's so scared he just lets them do their thing. He stayed there for 12 days last year when he was caught, mostly because of his hematoma. The girls had him sitting up at the front desk with them (of course he was on drugs at the time....).

If I recall, Cedric's chip was $62. Since I have spent so much on them lately, 50% off would help. I will ask them if they would sell it to me now and insert it when he comes in September. I will also ask if there will be any additional charges if we come now - is the whole "procedure" $62 or are there add-ons? Depending on the answer, I'll either do it now or wait, since the vet is about 20 miles away - I realize gas prices are coming down but still....

Thanks again!

I microchiped my Sorianna. It was done without any anesthesia, and she didn't seem to mind. There didn't seem to be any after affects. Dallas should be fine with it.

She tries to get out anytime she can, especially in the winter. My wegie girl loves snow and loves to run. She doesn't go far and knows where home is. But, it worried me that she might get out and someone might pick her up. She's not only pretty, but very friendly.

I just measured a Home Again chip needle . The diameter is 0.1094 inches. That is between an 10 and 9 gauge. A 20 gauge is 0.032 inches in diameter.

you know him almost as well as I do! ;-) The car ride would probably bother him more.
The emailed me back this morning and said I could prepay, so if I head over to the Studios this afternoon for Star Wars Weekends, I will stop by there and pay. If it is raining too hard, I might just skip it and visit them next Saturday on the way to work. There is another line of storms coming - it's been raining on and off for the past two days.

Based on everyones comments (and also the vet tech's) I will just have them place it. They apparently have a numbing agent for $22, which I can decide on when it happens. The main reason I waited taht extra week for Cedric was since they were doing the dental anyway, it would be easier to place it then. Cedric doesn't like going there. He growls & hisses. i think he smells the dogs (not fond of dogs although he acts like one) and he associates the exam room with the exam....When he had to board there last year he was better, especially since I gave the girls his "love glove" and they would brush his coat (one of his favorite things).

Thanks again everyone!
