The above is the first vet report on Eeyore. I had him revetted yesterday, and boy, he's doing really well. Eeyore turned it around!! I'm so excited. I picked him up, snuggled him, and whoooo hooo'd. He just licked my nose.

I am going to do it this way ("WNL"=within normal limits)
Before ...............................................After
Heart Murmur: Grade 3...............................None
BUN: 57 (high)........................................32 WNL
CRE: 2.6 (high).......................................1.8 WNL

Sodium: 165 (high)....................................146 WNL

RBC: 5.6 (low).........................................7.9 WNL
Hemoglobin: 8.8 (low).................................11.9 WNL
Hematocrit 25 (low)..................................34 WNL
Platelet count: 128 (low).............................101 LOW
Urine Specific Gravity: 1.065 (heavy)..............1.048 WNL

Weight: 7 pounds, 3 oz...............................10 pounds, 10 oz
Coat: Sparse, coarse..................................Thick, luxuriant
Skin: Flaky, scaley, dandruff.........................Normal
Energy: lethargic.......................................Normal
Appetite: Ferocious....................................Normal
Urine output: Excessive...............................Normal
Appropriate urination: Inappropriate................Consistent Litterbox

The **only** thing wrong (that I can see) is that he has a bit of an elevation on the components of the WBCs, meaning he likely has a bit of an infection. And since he needs a dental desperately, I'm thinking it's that. He's not demonstrating any "I don't feel well" behavior...but they're elevated, so I'm expecting a call from the vet wanting to put him on some sort of ABX.

From being told his kidney disease will kill him faster than his diabetes, to having very normal BUN/CRE levels; from being told he was anemic to having a good, solid normal RBC and H/H...yeah!! Eeyore has come out on top! I suspected the majority of his issues were from dehydration and malnutrition, and would be handled with proper nutrition, insulin and lots of lovies, and so I've given him that. And he did it...HE DID IT!!!!

10 weeks out of the closet, eating the right kind of food, and getting consistent diabetes treatment; 10 weeks of being in a household that adores kitties and doesn't lock them away...10 weeks, and he's so very much better than even I had hoped.

And he has curly belly hair! I love playing with it. He doesn't like it so much, but I just can't resist...it's soooo freakin' cute.

Oh, I am so relieved. Infection I can handle without much issue at all...if it's even that. The blood sample again showed clots (how this keeps happening, I just don't know...). I am just so tickled with his progress!!

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH EEYORE! And thanks, Venita, for bringing this boy into my life. He's such a love; he snores, but whatever...he's still a love.

Just thought I'd share a 'turn around' story...

What a great turnabout! You sure you got the right cat?
It's not surprising though. Lots of TLC and all that goes along with it, and you can't help but see improvements.
But still, that's a whole lot more than just some improvements!
I hope the a/b help with any infection he has.

I know - he's done a whole lot in 10 weeks; I had hoped for some improvement, but didn't expect an across the board WNL (excepting the WBC and platelet issues)...and yes, it's still Eeyore. I'm waiting for the vet to call with her thoughts about which ABX to use. We'll see what she says. I'm also interested in asking about vit B again, because that can help too.

Thanks, you guys. I'm thrilled. Simply thrilled. He really has turned around! WOOT!

I didn't see the original story, but it sounds like Eeyore had a rough life initially.
So happy to see that he's doing so much better :)
Congratulations to you and Eeyore!

Neutrophils, by chance? If so, that may be a stress reaction and not anything that would require antibiotics.

No, neutros are right in line. It's Baso, eosino, and monos that are high...

Just off the phone with the vet. She feels it's most likely some sort of reaction to something, and wants to check fecal for parasites (which would also account for the low platelet number). So that's the next thing we'llm do.

She asked if I was happy with the results, and I asked her "are you kidding me??" She laughed, said she's not used to seeing the turn around that complete, and was very pleased with how I've been treating him...and said "that's not the same cat you brought me before...". We both laughed. I am just so THRILLED!!! with this...just thrilled.

Now to get his sugars under control, and it will be easy street for him...

WOOT, badabada, WOOT!

He did have a rough beginning...involving closets, dogs in the closet with him, and dry dog food...even after his diagnosis of FD. He ended up w/ Venita of DCIN, and then I took him in. After the first vetting, I wasn't sure we were going to see the changed. But we have...we sure have. And no more closets, dog food, or skipped treatment for his FD. That's the only thing we have to work on now - his sugars. The vet has him on 0.5U of Lantus BiD, so we'll see how this goes; hopefully, it will start to bring him under 300 consistently...

Well, that certainly wouldn't require an antibiotic. Was it a manual or automated differential? False positives are common for basophils.

The platelets are low because cat blood is notorious for platelet clumps in EDTA tubes--which probably answers my question about the manual diff. If someone had actually looked at the slide, they would have included a platelet estimate.

The paperwork says:
" Clots are dectected in the LTT. These may falsely decrease the WBC, RBC, and platelet count, and may affect the differential. For most accurate results, please resbumit a new LTT. Blood smear was reviewed by technologist."

But I don't see anything about an estimate. My vet is not at all concerned...so I'm not going to worry, either. When I asked her about the platelet count, she said that clumping could drop the numbers, and chalked it up to that. She wants me to start Revolution, and to do the fecal...so I will.

I'm just so thrilled about the BUN/Cre...that had me soooooo worried. More than the anemia, to be honest...but hey! Lookit them numbahs...!!!

Well, that explains everything. They ran the CBC off a clotted sample, which means your results are inaccurate. No lab should be reporting results from a clotted tube. They should rerun that at no cost.

I don't see any point in spending money on a fecal when it's being based on bad results.

This is the second blood sample they've taken which has clotted...I paid for a new one yesterday (because, as they said, I took too long to bring him back in...). I'll give them a call tomorrow...see what they have to say.

It is super cool...but he did the work. I just put the food and medicine in front of him; he's done the rest. And it's been a great deal of work.

We're pretty happy!

Wow Eeyore. Kick @$$!
Curious.... does a heart murmur just "go away" confused_cat
One of our civvies has had a murmur for a while now. She'll be 15 next month. Getting worried about any future medical procedures (like dental - which she really needs).

Yay for Eeyore!!

Heart murmurs can be completely benign or, well, *not*. They grade murmurs into various categories, depending on severity and type. AFAIK, the only way to really tell the grade and type of murmur is through an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart).

I don't believe that (in general) murmurs heal by themselves; I think the exception to this may be in premature babies as their bodies develop. It's entirely possibly for a heart murmur to be unnoticable in most circumstances, until the patient is under some form of stress.

Michele,

I am thrilled to see these results for Eeyore. These are the results of what YOU did to save him from the closet. Fearlessly bursting onto the scene and whisking him out of a life-threatening situation. I am so proud of YOU!!

I am am so glad that he is such a joy to you in return.

I would love to see a new improved picture I could put on his blog page. You might have been posting them, but I haven't been following.

Thank you guys, so much. I'm so proud of that cat...just so proud. He's such a dear one.

One of our civvies has had a murmur for a while now. She'll be 15 next month. Getting worried about any future medical procedures (like dental - which she really needs).

Real quick anatomy lesson: the heart is a 4 chambered pressure and electrically controlled muscle.

"LUB": Blood enters through the top two chambers (atria), which puts pressure on the "doors" (valves), and an electrical current is triggered when they're full enough (from a pressure sensor called the Sino-atrial node). This electrical current travels throughout the heart, and causes a contraction, and the pressure opens the doors (valves) and drops the blood into the larger bottom chambers (ventricals).

"DUP": This is the sound of the valves closing. The closing sets up the atria for a new set of blood to come into it. With the second opening of the heart doors, the blood in the ventricals will be forced either into the lungs (from the right side) or into the body (the left side) from the heart, and go on about it's business of carrying nutrients, oxygen, and electrolytes throughout the body.

Murmurs:
A heart murmur can be caused by many things. A murmur means that one or more of the 4 chambers of the heart is not emptying fully, or in time, or the two sets of flaps are not closing completely, or not working in sync with each other. Most people associate a murmur with a valve issue, and it usually is something like that. But it can be caused by other things.

You can find, and grade (grossly) the murmur from a stethescope. You'll hear a whoosh, or an unsynchronized lub or dup, a machine-like rumble, or turbulence (like a creek against a set of rocks). Grading happens like this:
Grade 1: barely audible, with a stethie. Grade 2, audible with some listening with a stethie. Grade 3: easily audible throughout the heart with a stethie. Grade 4: Audible with listening to the lungs. Grade 5: Audible without a stethie with ear close/on chest. Grade 6: Audible without the use of any equipment listening near chest. You don't usually hear a grade 6, because the heart fails mostly before it gets to that level.

Causes of heart murmurs are many. They include mechanical (something goes wrong with the muscle), dysrhythmic (usually caused by electrolyte or blood component chemical imbalance), or congenital (born with it). It's definitely true that babies often have a congenital heart issue, caused by the foramen ovale (iirc) not closing with the first few breaths after birth. Often, these close over time, but can last for years (I think this is what Bret Michaels has, but am not sure). When one is older, it is more often mechanical, meaning the heart is simply wearing out over a lifetime of use; the valves no longer close tightly, open out of sync with each other, and so forth. Without surgical intervention, they usually just stay, and/or gradually increase to heart failure (congestive or otherwise).

With Eeyore, I was fairly sure that his dehydration, malnutrition, and electrolyte imbalances were causing his murmur. For him, it was a "simple" matter of getting the right food, and enough water, to create a more fluid blood flow (the dehydration, electrolyte, and anemia issues indicated this). Over time, as his body gradually came back into a stable balance, his murmur corrected itself. He now has a clear 2-beat heart sound, and I'm confident that his murmur was caused by issues with sodium/potassium imbalance, the anemia, and the lack of RBCs and dehydration. I did have concerns that his kidney issues were creating the murmur, but was almost positive that once the kidney issues were corrected (and I came to the conclusion that it was dehydration which caused the kidney issues, rather than a kidney failure issue itself), the murmur would lesson or completely correct itself.

I so hope that makes sense. **I** know what I mean, but may not have been successful in explaining it. Sorry...

I have been having computer issues, but I've got some new vid of the Grey Ball of Fuzzlove. I'll try to deal with the issues in the next few days, and get some new vid to you, deal?

And while I did whisk him away, if you hadn't posted about him, I'd've never had the chance. And since I didn't do much more than give him some food and water (no real special treatment, just as much as he could take in...) and a safe place for his body to heal, I can't really take too much credit. It all goes to this guy, you know? He did the work...I just gave him some tools.

And he blesses me constantly. He is always at my side, and lets me love on him whenever I want (and I want to often. LOL). He's mostly found his place in the pecking order, loves to sleep next to me on the pillows, and is generally an incredible kitty. I am sooooo blessed with his entry into my life - and that's all because of what you do, Venita; because if you didn't do that, he wouldn't be here...

Eeyore is the luckiest cat around. Michele, you're amazing, even if you think it's all his doing, you opened your heart and home and now you both reap the rewards. I'm looking forward to new pics :-D

So happy to hear this Michelle! Eeyore really was meant to find your home, and I'm so glad he did! Great job to BOTH of you--he couldn't do it without you!

Michelle -

So happy for you and Eeyore! dancing_cat

I've been followinmg his progress all along, and you've done an amazing job with him!

Enjoy that handsome, snuggly boy of yours!

WOW!!! My gosh, what a success story!!! I can't believe he's gained so much weight - that's FABULOUS! I'd love to see what he looks like now - I remember his old picture where his poor little face looked so thin. He's also come down on his insulin dose....yay! This makes me very happy. Let's see him!!!!

He looks like a completely different cat, Traci...he really does. Yes, his dose has been reduced to 0.5, after a long discussion and lots of thought between me and the vet (and several dears here). He will be on this dose *unless he hypos* for 7 days, and then we'll revisit the issue. And he had a great pink, stable day today.

I will do what I can to upload some video; I got hit badly by a virus, and have been operating in safe mode for close to a month, trying to deal effectively with the problem. I'm not winning. Sigh. So as soon as I can do that - or get my lappie to deal with the internet in my house (I'm wireless, and have NO idea why I can't use the internet in my house for my lappie...) and upload there, well...

But he looks MAHVELLLLLLLLLLOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSSS...and is just a gentleman of the highest order.

Yayyyyeee!!!!!!!!!! I love to hear these kind of stories. ((((((Michelle and Eeyore)))))))

Wow! What great news ! Good work Michelle...it always amazes me what good food and love will do for a kitty!

Have to admit when I saw your post after the initial vet visit I was really sad...it just didn't seem fair. But now ....whoopee!

Please send some pic pleeeeze!

To be completely honest, me too; and no, it wasn't fair. I thought he was in kidney failure, and wouldn't last too long. But I decided to see what good food, lots of love, and FD treatment would do.

Much to my surprise, Eeyore has turned it all the way 'round.

I am trying to figure out how to get the vids onto the computer, and then uploaded...once I do, I'll make sure you all see them. LOL. I am sooooo proud of him.

Hello Michele!
I'm so happy for You and Eeyore!
What the love can do! He is one lucky kitty !
All the best to you! (nurse)

Wow, fantastic news to read. I thought he was beautiful when I first saw his picture and now I can't wait to see the real Eeyore. I am so happy for both of you.....you got a great kitty to love on and he got a great home where he is loved and given the care he needs. Amazing turnaround....... :dizcat

I am so thrilled with him, you guys...it's just so cool to see him come 'round this way. It was cool last night, so he snuggled on me a lot; his new favorite position is to lay sprawled on my back, head resting on whichever cheek is on the pillow. If I reposition my head, he repositions *his* head to the new available cheek...and then goes back to snoring. LOL.

He is such a dear...

I'm trying very hard to get the issues with my computer resolved so that I can upload the vid for you guys...I can't wait for you to see him, as he "really" is...he's lovely. Totally LOVELY!

Best-
Michele

OK, this just gave me the biggest "AWWWWWWWW" moment ever. Complete with tears (happy ones!) in my eyes. That kitty loves you so much! He knows you saved him Michelle =) What a great story he has! Such a turnaround

Hi Michele, Eeyore, and Esse. What a great story is Eeyore's! He is one lucky kitty to have landed with you, Michele, and you are clearly the right bean at the right time. Looking forward to those new pictures when you get your computer issues under control. In the meantime, keep up the good work!
