Eddie is on Vetsulin insulin. He's been doing okay most of the time on this, receiving 3 to 4 units twice a day and as is the case with Vetsulin, it doesn't cover him for 24 hrs and he may go 6 to 8 hrs w/o enough insulin. But he's been in mid 200s and low 300s between shots. Not real happy with this but with Vetsulin it's seems to be the best we can get on a regular basis. This morning he tested at 158. I was too fearful of hypoglycemia, so I didn't give him a shot this morning and tested him just now and he's 485! His next scheduled shot isn't until 6:30 tonight! I plan on moving that shot up, but is there anything to be done now? His vet closes at 11:30 on Wednesday's.I feel awful and should have given him his shot this morning! We are hoping to switch him to BCP PZI soon.

How far away from 6:30 tonight are you now? (we are all in different time zones and countries). You could shoot now and work your way back to your normal shot time if you are able to shoot at off times for the next few shots.

It is the nature of Vetsulin to only work 6-10 hrs. With its quick action, shooting at 158 can be tough. In the future you might want to test again a half hour to an hour after that and see if you can give the shot just a little late. With Vetsulin, giving within an hour should be fine. I think looking into a longer lasting insulin would be a good plan, though none of them will get you 24hrs, they should produce longer, flatter curves.

I am on CST , so right now we are two hrs away from next shot because I am going to shoot him earlier than usual tonight. Just tested him again and he's 487. So from noon to now, he's risen very little. Still way too high. I am definitely going to talk to vet about different insulin to try perhaps along with the Vetsulin or PZI. Also a better plan of action when he's low before his shot. Thanks for good advice. I am working towards better control and more education on dealing with situations such as this. He's my boy and I want the best I can give him!
