Hi and welcome to the forum. If you can tell us about your kitty, I’m sure we can help you. If his diabetes is out of control he most likely needs his insulin adjusted but until we get more data from you we won’t be able to know

Lester;s blood sugar currently 542, takes 9 units vetsulin bid. Eats purina DM 2 cans bid and 1/4 cup purina dm dry at noon. Always hungry. Has been diabetic for a year. Previously on prozinc insulin and patient had no changes in BS. Patient was previously on fancy feast pate. Vet is wanting to increase insulin to 10 units bid other labs are good and urine showed no keytones.

Thanks for updating the signature.
9 units vetsulin is a very large amount of insulin.
When was he diagnosed?
When you started on Prozinc, how did you increase the dose?
How long has he been on vetsulin?
Do you have any lab results you can share with us? You will need to copy and paste them into this space.
If he is unregulated he will be hungry because his body cannot absorb all the nutrients in the food at the moment..
Are you hometesting the blood glucose yourself? If no I would really recommend you thought about doing it. We can help you with that.
If you are hometesting, it would be very helpful if you could set up a spreadsheet so we can see some of the data and see what is going on.

He was started on Prozinc about a year ago. We started at one unit and worked our way up to six or seven units. His blood sugars continued to be in the upper 480s so we switched to that salon one unit and then increased every week and the cat and I got really stressed out so we quit and kept him on 7 units bid since October. 3 weeks ago blood sugar was 485. Changed to diabetic good blood sugar decreased by 1.
I'm not sure what you mean by "Changed to diabetic good blood sugar decreased by 1."
I suspect that part of the reason that Lester's numbers are high is the dry DM. It's very high in carbohydrates. If you opt to switch him over to a low carb diet, please keep testing and transition slowly. Eliminating high carb food can drop his numbers.
Also there is nothing specific to treating diabetes in the Purina DM or any diabetic cat food, for that matter. If you read the ingredients, there is nothing that requires a prescription. In fact, the manufacturers have lost a class action suit for calling their foods "prescription." There are lots of canned foods that are lower in carbs. There are only 2 brands of dry food that are under 10% carb.

I meant to say that he was changed to the purina DM and he was on the wet and the dry. I have since stopped giving him the dry food. I have been looking at the food list of canned foods and looking for the low carb. I’m basically starting over and going to request to dry a different insulin. 9 units seems like too much. I am going to learn how to test at home, i have tried before and it was a complete disaster.
