Hello, I posted this in OTJ and am posting here to get more eyes.
As some of you may remember my 17 year old girl Ailish became diabetic after a course of steroids last year. My family had just added a human baby at the time so a friend of mine stepped in to help with the care so Ailish splits her time between me and her other care givers house. We got lucky and reached remission back in March. Her behavior since then has been normal.
Unfortunately, about a month ago, she started yelling at night. At first, it was only around Don and then it was every hour. We took her to the vet and it turned out she had an ear infection.
They gave us Tresaderm a three and one medicine to help with ear infections. I saw it had steroids in it so I asked the vet about that. He said that the steroids should not impact her BG since they would only be in her ear, but that we could keep an eye on her with testing and if they did, he would come up with another plan. As I suspected they would, the steroids increased her BG so we took her off them and he prescribed an antifungal that she takes orally and an ear wash. The tresaderm did seem to help her ears cleared up. She started to feel better and stopped howling at night once she was off the tresederm and on the antifungal in the ear wash her BG went back down to normal.
Unfortunately, in the past few days, she has started howling at night again. We have our follow up scheduled with the vet on Saturday. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or experience dealing with a cat with ear infections who is also diabetic? Did you find anything that worked that did not involve steroids?
