Dusty Hissing At Me

All of the sudden Dusty is hissing at me and won't let me get close. Yesterday he was normal up until it was dinner time. Sometimes he plays hard to get when it's time to eat so I play with him, he purrs and then starts eating. This time I played with him and then suddenly he growled at me and started hissing so I thought ok he really doesn't want to eat right now. I let him be for a couple of hours then tried to feed him again and as I would get his bowl close to him he would growl and hiss. He was like that all night. He usually sleeps with me so he actually jumped in the bed at one point looked at me and then ran off. He did eat the food I left out overnight, he peed normal, and pooped normal. Last GC test was this past weekend and he was good at 61. He's fine with my other cat but suddenly not me. This morning I tried to feed him and again he was hissing and growling when I got his bowl close to him. He looks at me like he want's to interact but at the same time he looks like he can't trust me. Yesterday when it all started I had just come back from running and got caught in a rainstorm, maybe I picked up a scent from another cat or dog? What could it be? I'll have to see what he's like after I get home from work nailbite_smile .
 
Thanks Ilovelarry, hope he gets over it, not sure how I would catch him if I had to take him to the vet. I don't know if he's just bluffing or if he would really attack me if I grabbed him, it's very unlike him. It just happened so sudden, one second he's normal then he's not. I think I got him mad or picked up a strange scent while running. I was soaked and running through puddles and I run past an area full of feral cats. @-)

I was going to ask if you recently changed deodorant, cologne, laundry detergent, etc.... Something might smell "off" about you.
Then again, he is a cat so it might just be some temperamental bug up his arse. angry(2)_cat :dizcat

He only does it when you bring him food? What if you go up to him without food?

If it were me id put the food down and pick him up and give love for a little while. It would hurt my feelings.

Are you doing something during feeding time that he doesn't like and connects the 2? like checking his BG before food?

I noticed lately when I changed Wease's food schedule to 3 times a day, I test his blood then feed he gets annoyed at me trying to take his blood because he wants to eat so bad.
 
Even without food he hisses at me. I didn't do anything different than I've been doing for months now. I'm only testing once a week because he's OTJ and in remission so that wasn't it. Oh, I just bought him some cat grass during lunch and he loves that stuff so hopefully that'll calm him down. I'll be home in a couple of hours, hoping for the best! nailbite_smile
 
I'd also grab another BG test today and make sure his numbers aren't elevated. If they are higher, he probably isn't feeling well and that's why he's reacting that way. Maybe a bad tooth?
 
I know this sounds gross but do you think you might have stepped in cat urine while running?

During the last snow here, I had to put the poop bags in a trash bag on the back porch as I was not able to get to the trash can outside. Well after a couple days I picked up the bag and put into the trash can. I come back in and could smell urine but I thought it must have been Catee. I kept smelling it and in the process I got his food and water. Touched all his bowls. Well I smelled my hands and it was me. A cat had urinated on the trash bag and when I picked it up I got it on my hands, pants, and shoes. Catee could smell it on his bowls and in his room. He started growling and hissing at me. Huffing and puffing. So I keep away from him when he is like that as he did attack me two years ago and I got cat scratch fever.

I had to get him new bowls... he would not eat or drink out of the old ones.

So you may have picked up the scent and it is on your shoes?
 
Well I came home and he was hanging out in the spare bedroom, soon as he saw me he went under the bed growling and hissing. I showed him the cat grass and he showed interest. I shoved it under the bed and ate some seeming to calm down. He didn't want eat his Fancy Feast but when I threw some Evo towards him he ate some. He peed and pooped normally so he did eat last night and today. He's not hissing or growling at me at the moment but he won't come to me or his bowl. I did wash his bowl with soap and water in case I got some cat or dog scent on it yesterday while running. I really want to get a GC reading on him but the only way to catch him is to close the door and basically crawl under the bed and corner him. Since he's calm right now I probably shouldn't do that just now, since all heck would probably break loose and might make things worse. I think I'm on my way to gaining his trust again, I'll give it another night and day tomorrow and we'll see if he sleeps with me tonight. After tomorrow I'll have all weekend to spend some time with him. Just wondering, Is it possible to have have really low GC while not on insulin? Thanks for all the replies!
 
It's technically possible but not probable. They would have to be on a medication or have a disease or defect of some sort to cause that.
 
Well I reached under the bed, he hissed and growled but I gently stroked his back and slowly moved up to his chin, he loved that! I kept scratching his chin till he started purring and then he rolled onto my hand as I kept scratching. I started rubbing his tummy and seized the opportunity to grab and pull him from under the bed. I held him in my lap as he tried to get away but I calmed him down. That was my chance to get a GC reading and that wasn't too hard, it read 79. A little higher than his usual 60s but still not bad considering how stressed he was. I held him in my lap soothing him and then got him to eat some FF from my leg :lol: . He was pretty hungry and ate it all up. Held him a little longer and them let him go. He ran behind the sofa but he's not as spooked now. While holding him I felt around his belly and didn't feel anything unusual. I just feel better knowing his GC is still ok. Let's see if he sleeps with me tonight ;-) .

just like Dani, I too had a urine-type misadventure which resulted in my being afraid of Pudge for 2 or 3 days. I had not realized that a strange cat was apparently coming up to the back screen door to pee until Pudge & his best friend (my daughter's male cat) went screaming, tearing through the house puffed up to an incredible size and stayed like that for a couple of hours. The next day the same performance. I never did see the 'invader' of their territory, just the droplets of pee. Both cats were hissy for a couple of days. I gave them a wide berth! Never again did I see such performance. Pudge is a big cuddlelump, as is the other cat. I'm still surprised at the level of fear I felt! To sum up: urine could well be involved though, in my case, it was the human who was afraid & staying away from the kitties!

Well Dusty slept with me and ate breakfast normally. He wasn't running around the house in stealth mode (low to the ground), he was upright and tail straight up! When he was running around like that I was afraid he was in some kind of pain but I'm glad it wasn't. Guess that cat scent is some strong stuff! Now I'm worried about running again and dragging some other scent in the house. Guess I'll just remove my shoes before I come in the house :mrgreen: .

Or, you could leave your shoes on and see if he reacts the same.... :lol:
 
You could wear disposable booties over the shoes if they'd hold up to a jog.

Wipe down footwear with enzymatic cleaner before entering the home.

Or use a bleach tray. What they used at the shelter is a shallow pan with nubbed rubber mat in it, contailing a a bleach dilution. You step in it, wait a minute or so, and step out onto absorbent toweling etc. May completely cover any odor; will disinfect it.
 
Great ideas to keep foreign scents off my shoes now that I know I have a temperamental cat. I have some disinfecting Mr. Clean spray, I'll try that too. I think a big part of this whole mess was like KPassa said, he just had a temperamental bug up his arse :-x
 
His #s look good, and that 79 isn't anything unusual. Some cats are slightly higher than others, and other thrive on lower #s. Still, though, I'd suggest keeping an eye on him, and check him periodically, or as you have been doing. Great job!
 
Thanks Angela, I have a hard time extending the time between GC tests. So far I'm still doing weekly tests but don't feel comfortable enough to go longer. I'll try and graduate to every 2 weeks... nailbite_smile
 
If you feel comfortable enough to do so, try testing every other day for a bit, and then if you feel he's still doing fine, then every few days, and so forth. Eventually, you'll graduate to every week, etc. :)
 
Dusty hissed at me a couple of times yesterday but today he's very much back to his normal self. His GC reading this morning was back down to his normal range at 68 and he's eating, peeing, and pooping normally. He comes up to me to pet him every so often as we hang out in the living room watching the rain and some birds that fly onto our balcony. ~O)
