OMG, if it hadn't have been for everyone's encouragement here .... I don't think I might have been able to do it!!! So here are his numbers, please comment!! I'm not really positive what they mean ...

643am 390 mg/dl (pre-Lantus) 1u Lantus delivered had breakfast

10am 369mg/dl

1pm 307mg/dl Had little snack

4pm 354mg/dl had supper

615pm 377.8mg/dl 1u Lantus delivered

I gave the Lantus a little early because tomorrow is back to work, and the times will be earlier. He will be on 630am/630pm instead of 7am/7pm. Now, I'll be tackling that spreadsheet ..... but please, does anyone have insight to these numbers from today???? Also, I didn't have a problem with his ears but should I put ice on them or something??? I am not sure how sore they are liable to be, but Duffie still headbutted me so I don't thing he hates me ..... yet!

Thank you,
- Natalie

I am so proud of you!!!!!!!!! This is great! I will ask the experts to chime in here about what the numbers mean. Can you tell us what Duffie ate for his snack and also for his dinner, as that may help the experts to evaluate. Are you still free feeding the Hill's dry food Healthy Advantage that your vet recommended (as that will have an impact on his BG numbers).

For the ears...I do not think you need to put ice on them. I rub a tiny amount of Neosporin ointment (the "pain relief" formula) on my cat's ears after testing. Do they sell Neosporin in Canada? If so, make sure you get the ointment, not the cream and also the version that says "pain relief ointment." But many people on this board do not use anything. If you are using a new lancet, I do not think your cat will have a problem.

CONGRATULATIONS on your first curve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dancing_cat dancing_cat

Yay!!
looking forward to seeing the spreadsheet.

I would say that the dose is good at the moment. It's starting to show an effect . Keep at it because it will build up and you'll keep
seeing numbers trending down.
It would help to know if snack was before test or after. Snacks /meals do raise the bg level temporarily, usually about 2 hrs worth.

I'll be doing one next week or so.
Shadow's ears show too many tender owies right now....

Hi there,

Thanks for the replies! Yes I kept track of everything including his snacks and where on his body he got either the ear stick or the Lantus poke.

So, the first reading, 390, was before breakfast (wet Rabbit Ziwi Peak cat food) and before the Lantus. Then at 10am it was down to the 369; then at 1pm the 307 reading was before he got his snack which was more ZP wet rabbit cat food. At 4pm his reading was 354, then the test at 6pm was before his supper of (you guessed it!) wet ZP. I have taken away the Hill's Healthy Advantage and he is getting a bit of Halo dry grain-free turkey cat food; he doesn't really like it too much so he didn't eat very much dry. I was really hoping that he would be responding faster but guess I have to be patient. He really likes the wet ZP rabbit cat food which I read somewhere in here that different source protein such as rabbit was a good idea. Oh, and every time I got blood from his ear, his treat was an Evo "Wild Cravings" Herring and Salmon formula savoury treats for cats. Duff looooves them. I hope that didn't mess up the readings.

Now early this morning he was meowing, so I got up and fed him a small amount at about 330am. I think he's learning to work the system! lol I was worried he was needing some food. After he ate he came back and slept until the the alarm went at 530am. lol

Well I asked about the ice because I just felt so badly about his ears; I hate to say it but once I went through and the blood showed up on the inside of the ear. Yes I am using brand new lancets each time, a really really small microlancet. If it had to be done those are the ones I would want to use on myself. Very tiny and he really didn't react at all. I have to get some Neosporin (yes I'm sure it's here). His ears don't look infected or anything but anything for pain relief sounds good to me. In fact, I found a tube of Emla topical cream which people can use for ouchy procedures (injections, etc) but I wasn't sure if it was safe for cats so I didn't use it.

It was a fairly stressful day (for me) and I hope I don't have to do a BG curve again for a while ... please tell me that's the case ...... lol

Natalie: Do you need help putting together a spreadsheet, or do you already have one? I'd be glad to set one up for you if you need assistance. Just send me a private message (PM button to the right).

Update: Ooops... sorry, I don't know how to do the "world" spreadsheet so if that is the one you need, I can't help you afterall. Maybe someone else out there has experience with this one?

When I first started to test, I was testing with a 28g lancet. My Doogle's ear looked so bruised and horrible. I did apply Pain Relief Neosporin and it helped. After a week of testing every few hours a day, his ears learned to bleed better and I was able to move down to a 31g lancet which is no where near as evasive as the 28g. The holes are a little smaller but enough to get blood. Kitty ears dont feel it really especially if its done quickly. Also make sure to apply some pressure to the spot afterwards (hold it and loving on Duff at the same time). It gets a whole lot easier. Doogle even knows when its time to get his because he either gets a treat or playtime. He comes with no problems, lays down and just waits for it to happen. Just be patient and the ears will look a whole lot better. Fantastic job too on the curve. After I switched from Humilin N to Lantus I wanted it to happen so quickly since I have read everything on here on how great it is and how some kitties go OTJ but ECID and I have to be patient and let it do its work. Also great job on changing times too!!!!!!!! Keep it up!! Has anyone linked on how to do a profile for you and Duff? Just a little spot on the web using Google Sites to give some background, plus you can add some pics of your sugar baby (which we all LOVE to see). :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
