Morning all,
Question:
My Jesse James was diagnosed in Feb with diabetes. He gets 2units of Lantus 2x day. He also eats canned fancy feast classics.
He was getting PURINA DM Dry Food, but it is not his favorite. My question is this. Does anyone use BLUE BUFFALO WILDERNESS WEIGHT MANAGEMENT dry food in place of the Purina DM?

From experience I would say no. I used to feed my cats that to try to keep weight stable and hopefully lose weight.....instead Hidey gained a diagnosis of diabetes, luckily since taking him off he is now diet controlled.

If your looking for a replacement......of course it is recommended no dry food, You can try Young again zero carb (5% carbs), EVO cat & kitten (12% carbs), Stella and Chewys freeze dried (1% carbs I THINK), or theres another one someones been mentioning is the wysong epigen 90 but I dont remember the carb %.

I know its frowned upon but my kitties like their crunchies so they each get 1/8 c to munch on (Young Again) The Young again is pricey but they eat less of it and you can only get it online, but they guarantee it, they dont like it send it back. The others you can find at some stores just go to their websites and use the store locator.
 
Blue Buffalo dry food is way too high in carbs!

Try Wysong Epigen instead (no carb option) and your cat might be OTJ pretty quickly. Took me maybe 10 days.
 
Jesse James LOVES his crunchies....saying that then which dry food would you all recommend? WOuld I need a script from my vet or would a dry food you like be bought on line or in a pet store?

None of the recommend foods need a prescription, and in fact are better and lower carbs then the prescription dry foods. Every one has their own favorite. I would recommend the young again for several reasons. They guarantee their food, its lower carb, and their customer service is AMAZING! They are so helpful and friendly. I tried my cats on EVO and it didnt sit well with their stomachs, but every cat is different. Customer service is #2 in my book, id say #1 but if my cats wont eat it then its out of the question lol but if I get great customer service I'm loyal lol. I also love that I can understand the ingredients.

once again they are pricey but you have to consider they eat less. They also have a calculator on their site that will give you an idea of how long the food will last you.
 
Just a warning, there are many other reasons to ditch the dry food other than the diabetes, as it can prevent a host of other nutrition related ailments later in life, including kidney disease and urinary tract disease. Low carbs is only one compent of a healthy diet for cats; the other is that it's important for the cat to get moisture in its food (it's been proven that cats never make up for the loss of moisture in a dry diet at the water dish). If you are able to get rid of the dry now, it will certainly pay off in the long run. The convenience factor is not worth the scores of health problems it causes, imho.

There are also some (but not all) diabetic cats that are sensitive to even the low carb dry foods (mine being one of them) because even though it's low carb, it might not necessarily be low glycemic. The rendering process for any dry food automatically raises that food's glycemic index. I can feed Bandit a low carb, higher glycemic dry food at 8% carbs, and his BG will shoot up into the 200-300s. If I give him a low glycemic canned food at 9% carbs, he's perfectly fine.
