Hello.
My IBD baby is on dry food kibble because of his IBD issues. It has been such a difficult road these three months, in trying to manage both diseases, I feel at the end of my sanity, without exaggeration, I am thinking of going back to taking pills and I was doing so well without them..
I love my baby so much and it hurts to see him go through this, we dont have two days in a row without an upsetting event coming up and I feel I have become his worst enemy, he runs and hides when he sees me...
Raw is out of the question for now and we have been so limited with options, here in Europe I was still to find more than two brands of food that give us good numbers for his IBD and Diabetes (those we tried, they failed). We are now on Royal canin gastrointestinal as emergency patch for his lately loose stools and vomit, and it has way too much hc so I have been going crazy trying to find a brand that is within limits and would fit both profiles of requirements.
I have finally found a site that imports Ziwi Peaks and have ordered two bags as emergency transport. It is crazy expensive but if he likes it and works well with him (I have my expectation way high) I am willing to pay, no question about it.
First there will be a trail of elimination as with all the other foods, see how he reacts to it, but if he likes it and doesnt cause loose stools, I was thinking of first introducing 1/6 and see how his BG reacts to it. What about then?
That is my issue. The RC dry has a lot of carbs (26.7 DM carb) and Ziwi Peak has almost a 1/4 of that (7 DM carb) - calculated both using the Scheyder calculator. That difference to me is huge, is not with like other dry foods, until now the difference was insignificant and I could just monitor the blood a bit closer.
How would you advice I go about it? Should I deal with it as to the transition from dry to wet, when stopping dosing for 24 hours and then check again with a curve and start with a lower dose?
Right now his numbers are high, we shot 3.75 but we have some fluctuations every few days, drops in sugar - one tonight (maybe caused by diarrhoea and hairball vomits) that force me into lowering the dose every now and then so we cant get regulated.
In case someone wonders why am I not consulting on this with the vet, I will. But they are not being to open minded and Im expecting a conservative view on switching to diabetic food instead of this. I am at that point when I am willing to trust my gut and risk it instead of following blindly. I am also in the process of consulting with other vets, next week I will check with a gastrointestinal specialist but I am afraid that for diabetes I will have to find another and options are limited in this field as well.
Thank you for reading and trying to help, sorry for the long post, wanted to be thorough as I think it is important and I really need some help.
