Just had my vet prescribe the solostar pen to be more economical with Lantus. My vet just called me and said the pharmacist didn't think it was possible to use a syringe to draw insulin from the pen - that I would need special needles to use the pen. Can anyone explain how I get to the rubber stopper on the solostar and draw out the insulin. I've been using a 10ml vial until now. I would like to find out if this is possible before I pick up the solostar tomorrow. Thank you for sharing your Lantus wisdom.

Hi-

Welcome to LantusLand!

You draw from the pen the same way you draw from the vial...you don't want to use the special needles that come with the pen.

Here's a great video on how to do it, starring our very own Julie...

Drawing from a Solostar Pen

There's the same rubber sealed end in the pens as in the vial when you remove the little cap. Pharmacist hasn't ever seen one open so doesn't understand it.

Oh - pens work on NEGATIVE PRESSURE so don't shoot air into them like a vial, just draw.

Hugs!

Re: drawing from a solostar pen

Thank you for responding so quickly. I am sharing everything I learn with my vet. She was very excited to learn about the savings using Solostar as she hadn't heard of this insulin option before! I will print up all of the information so my vet can use it in the future. Thank you for this board.
