Dr want to change diet to DM

I emailed my vet today to let him know that my sugar kitty is consistently in the 300s and starving all in the time. He recommended blood test but also she needs more than just low card food, she needs more fiber. Wants to give her the Hills or Science DM food. I just want her to not be so hungry all of the time.

sigh.. how many times have I read just this, here. I'm guessing in the lobby of the practice, theres a display of "Hills" foods. How do I know that? Because the Vet gets kickbacks from Hills to push their food. I've never had a cat that would eat Hills anything. I told my Vet "What good is this food, if they wont eat it"?

Are you home testing? Can you add a link to your spreadsheet in your signature? We can use this help you.

Because your cats glucose levels are not under control, her body is not processing food correctly. For now, feed her more often.

Is your cat starving because she's not eating enough, or is she eating plenty but starving due to high BG symptoms? If she's eating plenty, stick with the low carb food (and her absorption of it should improve as her diabetes improves). If she's not eating enough, it's ok IMO (not ideal by any means, but ok enough to still potentially get her to remission) to feed Hill's D/M dry (or something similar), but I would only go that route if you absolutely have to in order to get your cat to eat.

I was feeding Jess almost three 5.5 oz cans over a 24 hr period in the beginning - down to roughly one and a half cans a day now.

Unregulated diabetic cats are very hungry.

When you do start feeding as much as kitty wants, be prepared. He wont gain much weight. Once the insulin starts working then you need to cut back a bit at a time, to maintain his usual svelte figure

I would not feed the DM dry food. Apart from being higher carb, it is very low in moisture.......7% compared to 78% for canned or raw food. So much better for cats kidneys as well as pancreas.
Unregulated cats’ bodies can’t absorb all the nutrients in the food so you will need to feed extra until the BGs improve and his appetite returns to normal. Keep an eye on his weight.
Feed frequently (small snacks often) during the day and night will help his hunger.
I also recommend home testing the blood glucose. You will know then if you are giving enough insulin and you can keep your kitty safe.
