My Jaguar is currently on 5 1/2 u of insulin and at 4:15pm we tested him because he as hungry but it wasn't dinner and shot time, but it had been 2 hours since his last meal. He tested 89 (he generally runs 200-300). I gave him wet food and we tested him again right now and he was 87. Which is dinner and shot time. I held off giving him his insulin but gave him dinner, My question is should we wait another hour and retest? Then if he is over 100 should we decrease his dose in half? Our vet said that she wouldn't give 5 1/2 u any lower than 150. If he's under 100 still then I think I need to skip his dose, correct? He isn't a new diabetic but I am new to the forum.

Hi!
I am not experienced enough to give dosing advice... this will bump up for more experienced eyes--
The wise ones tell us not to feed and retest so the number is not food influenced but lets see what they say...
also if you add the ? icon it will grab more attention :bighug:

We really need some more information, especially which insulin you're using

Since you fed, you really want to wait at least 2 hours before considering shooting so the food isn't influencing the number. The next time you get a number you're not sure about shooting, it's best to stall, DON'T feed and test again in 20-30 minutes to see if it's coming up on it's own without food

Of course shooting 2 hours late will depend on if you can adjust your shot schedule for the next couple of days....You can work your way back to your "chosen" schedule 15 minutes per cycle or 30 minutes per day

He is on lantus. We waited another hour and tested again. He's up to 129. Which I'm sure is the food, we're already an hr late for his dose. We did give him 2 u. We'll check him again in a few hours.
