Dosing in Range??

New to diabetes and injections and concerned about injecting too much when he is in range.

Gunny is receiving 5U Lantus 2x per day trying to get his glucose numbers down and has Always been 300 (Libre2) or above when I gave him his injection. He tends to go down in the 60-70 range at night.

I just got home and fed him. He is due for his injection. Gunny's glucose numbers have been looking the best they have been since we started a few days ago and I have not given him his 5U injection yet as I am concerned it might drive his glucose too low. He tends to go low at night in the 60-80 range.

Sorry I don't have the spreadsheet up yet and hope to work on it tonight if I can get my Google account fixed.

I am thinking about playing it safe and reducing to 3 or 4 units. Thoughts?

I notice you said in your first post that Gunny had ketones at diagnosis. And the starting dose was 4 units Lantus. That is a big starting dose.
Have you tested again for ketones?
could you please put ‘ketones at diagnosis’ in your signature please.?

I am going to ask @Bandit's Mom to help you set up the spreadsheet as we really need that to see what’s happening to the blood glucose during the cycles. You mentioned in the first post they drop to 61.
It is very hard to suggest a dose without seeing any real data and the fact he has had ketones complicates it.

Is he eating lots of food?
Are you giving him snacks in between the 2 main meals.
 
He is eating lots of food. I am giving him about one tsp of Fancy Feast canned about every two hours between meals. I don't have "ketone at diagnosis" as they didn't supply me with a lab report and they have been closed for the Thanksgiving holiday since Wednesday afternoon. I wasn't aware that ketones existed or were an issue until they sent him home a couple of days ago or that I could even test for ketones until this afternoon.

I have been trying to get in touch with the vet for more information but no response yet.

I have been focusing on getting the injections correct and fighting the fungal infections plus finding and a high protein low carb diet that he will eat to keep the bouncing down.

I will work on the ketones and spreadsheet
 
If the vet told you he had Ketones you don’t need further information from the vet about that. Just put ketones at diagnosis into the signature so that alerts us.
You will need to buy some Ketostix from Walmart as doing as you can to test the urine for ketones. It might be called another name at Walmart but just ask for the test that looks for ketones in the urine. It’s important we know if there are still some ketones in the urine.
Keep giving lots of food and if he will let you add a teaspoon of warm water to those snacks of food.
What did you decide to do about the dose of insulin?
 
I stalled as one of the pages on the site suggested when using Lantus to see which way his glucose was going and got a 191 at 7:53PM which was up a bit from the 184 at 7:10PM. It looked like it was going up so I gave him a 4U which was his initial starting dose when we brought him home and down a bit from the 5U which was required to get him down from the 300-400 highs.

I guess I will be up for another night monitoring and feeding small amounts of canned Fancy Feast pate. I am fortunate that so far he has only openly rejected one kind and I have several available.

I will give my other guys and girl the ones he doesn't like. I am a failed foster parent and my wife doesn't want me near pet stores.

The syringes that the vet sent with us are 30 gauge and do not have the half unit markings. I will get some on order.

Yes it will be easier when you have to make the adjustments
