Dosing consistency question

Does dosing need to be consistent? Like, can I shoot a 1/2 unit in the AM if AM number is fairly low and then shoot a 0.75 unit or 1 unit in the evening if the PM number is higher? Or is it better to stay within the same dose for 3 cycles (3 days.) ? Obviously, won't ever shoot if numbers are super low.

I shot Roo 1/2 unit this morning as her number was 189 on the ReliOn. I also had a rough night and morning as I lost my best friend on Sunday (found out Monday that he died.) Had a severe stress headache and ended up in bed much of the day. Wasn't sure if I'd be home or well enough - and didn't want her to go too low. Then tonight her number was much higher so I gave her a 0.75 unit. (tough to eyeball it too!)

Just wondering how it should regularly work. Thanks for any input.
Tylenol and chicken soup= check. Snuggle with Roo now= check. Back to bed.

I'm so sorry you lost your best friend. Sending prayers for his friends and family. :bighug:

I can't really help you with ProZinc, I know very little about it. I know, with Lantus, it's best to give the same dose both AM and PM, but ProZinc may be different. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of it will respond soon.

Prozinc is an "in and out" type of insulin so there is little or no carryover from the previous shot. You are doing a good deal of testing so you have some decent data on how your kitty is responding to the Prozinc. With the "in and out" type insulins, with adequate testing data it can be useful to use a sliding scale for shots, based on noth the nadir and preshot numbers. From the Prozinc sticky:

"SLIDING SCALE DOSING

If your cat is having pre-shots in different ranges and it seems dangerous or ineffective to shoot the same dose for each pre-shot, you can consider shooting different doses for different ranges. (For example, giving 2 units on a 400 mg/dL {22 mmol/L} pre-shot can produce different results than giving 2 units on a 200 mg/dL {11 mmol/L} pre-shot.) Note: It is best to have an experienced member look at your spreadsheet history and suggest some ranges/ doses. Once you are comfortable with the concept, you might adjust on your own"

If you are going to try a sliding scale it would be best to have some experienced Prozinc users giving you some guidance to start with. It would be a good idea to try posting on the Prozinc forum with a title such as "Prozinc help needed with sliding scale" There are some wonderful people with lots of experience in using Prozinc that can give you some help with determining what will work best for Little Roo. :bighug::bighug:
