Carl was doing so well and seemed to not need insulin for a week at the beginning of the month. That was a fakeout and now has been high in the mornings, 400s and midday lows in the high 200s. I've kept him at 2 and 1 unit because I couldn't guarantee I would be home to test him and didn't want to increase without testing. This weekend Saturday - Monday (5/1-3) I'll be able to test (I have no support people for help with him other than giving insulin).
He has an appointment with vet on the 4th. I'm going to ask for Lantus.

*Should I increase this weekend and if so to how much?
* any tips for speaking with the vet? I go to a low-income only clinic and the vet that was most interested in switching is out after surgery so I will be seeing a different vet. (most of the vets there are retired from their own practice and seem to be old-school in treatment plans)

I also had recently changed from chicken Fancy Feast Classic to Beef, which he likes much better. I didn't know if that would affect his levels at all.

He refuses to eat Dr Elseys Clean Protein so he only gets freeze dried treats of chicken or salmon or home cooked no additives chicken in addition to FF.

I’ve been in touch with Shel at Diabetic Cats In Need, and hopefully if the vet decides to change the insulin type they might be able to help.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thank you ladies

Yes, thank you!
I have not done night time testing for many reasons, my health is not the best of late, test and Dr appointments and trying to work, the hours are too much. I go to bed soon after I get home. I've given notice at my work to reduce my hours they just need to finish training someone.

I totally understand, I hope you start to feel better :bighug:
Carl's a handsome boy

Hi there, For bloodwork I would request a full CBC panel with urinalysis to check for ketones. You could do a fructosamine test but it looks like Carl is not regulated so a fructosamine would just tell you what you already know because you test so perhaps you can save some money by skipping it. I have only ever used Lantus so can't provide any guidance with dosing Vetsulin, but Lantus would provide Carl with a better shot at getting regulated so you should try to get it if you can. All of the Fancy Feast pates are fine for diabetic kitties. Good luck with the vet. :bighug:
