dosing advantage or frontline?

Several other members on other threads have mentioned using dog size doses of Advantage or Frontline and splitting them to use on cats. For example, using a treatment of advantage (not Advantix) for a medium size dog and using it on three cats. Since I have ten cats this would save me a great deal of money. Buying ten monthly cat size doses of Frontline or Advantage every month is very expensive. :-( !!!!

Right now I am using Frontline plus. The dog version of Frontline plus and the cat version appears to list the same active ingredients. Does anyone know if the active ingredients are in the same concentration? Is there any difference in the inert ingredients that would be harmful to cats?

A related question I have is about fleas developing an immunity to specific products. I had used Advantage products for years and suddenly they stopped working. My theory is that the fleas may have become immune to the ingredients in Advantage. I recently switched to Frontline Plus and this killed off about 95% of the fleas. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

In South Florida it is flea season year round. I just had the worst flea invasion I have ever had in the whole twenty years I have lived here. I almost wonder if there is some new species of super flea around or something!!! LOL. ;-)
 
I have bought Frontline Plus on EBay, and I get a single tube of the large dog version and instructions on how to measure it for cats. Here are some examples: one, two, and three. So I would say yes, you can use the dog FP on cats.

The one thing I would caution if you use EBay is to check to make sure you aren't sold a counterfeit product. Here is a fact sheet from the EPA.

I had problems with Advantage not working on one of my cats. The vet's office said that had been their experience also.
 
2ven if I buy the Frontline from a ocal pet store or Foster & Smith, it would still be less expensive to divide up dog doses than buy a twelve pack of individual cat doses. Advantage worked great on all of my cats up until about two months ago. I know bacteria can mutate and become immune to certain antibiotics. I assume the same can happen with fleas and ichemicals.

Thanks for the links to the dosing instructions. I am generally leery of buying things on e-bay any ways.
 
I've been giving my cats Advantage for big dogs (>55#) for years. The active ingredient is exactly the same, just the dosages are different. If you pay attention, it's perfectly fine and will save you tons. The big dog 6-packs cost the same as the feline 6-packs and you get 5x more product. Just make sure you don't overdose them.
