Hillary and Maui,

I want to thank you soooooo much for posting that picture of the "sweet spot" for blood testing I have used that the last two days and if I don't get it on the first try I get it on the second so thank you a million times over.

Ok so here is the question for today: at 6:30am this morning I tested Gizmo and his bg was 153, I fed him canned food (mixture of Iams and Fancy feast) gave him 1/2 u. Then tested his blood again at 3:00pm (to get an idea of what the 1/2 u was doing for him) and his bg was 171, it wasn't time for his next dose yet so I gave him some tuna fish. I then tested him again at 7:00pm and his bg was 151. So my question is do I just do another 1/2 u or should I do the 1 u (please note that he was originally put on 1 u but I was afraid that he would go to low if I gave him the full unit) ? I'm so worried that he will go hypog. on me.

I am putting up the whiska treats, does anyone know what treats would be ideal for when I'm testing his blood? Please note that I need something that is soft so that I can hide medicine in it.

Thank you all again for your feed back

Sincerely,

Kitsey and Gizmo's momGizmo Wilshin

Hello.
Did you give him his morning shot at 6:30am or shortly thereafter?
So right now, you're a bit late.

The number you got at 3pm (171) would have been his his +8 or +9 depending on what time you gave the shot this morning.
And then it dropped at 7 pm to 151.

Could Gizmo have found some dry food in the middle of the day?

This was the first shot. I'd keep it the same for a couple of days at least and try to get a few more tests at different times. So .5.
You don't know Gizmo's pattern yet. Or when the insulin is at it's peak performance.

You do want to keep your time consistent. And if you don't like 6:30, you can work it to a different time but make changes in 15 minute increments.

For a soft treat, you could use a bite of tuna. Always good to give them their favorite. It gets their attention.
Just make tuna the treat only, and don't feed it too because Gizmo could decide he only wants that from now on.
You don't want to get boxed in to only one food which isn't good for cats.

hmmmm I gave him the first dose shortly after testing him this morning. As for the time the vet told me that if I give it to him (the Lantus) at say 7:30 am I have a cusion of two hours before or after that time to give him the next dose. So I would be able to give it to him any where between 5:30pm to 9:30pm on the night dose. Can I get feed back on this I would like to ask her all of these conflicting information when we see her on his next visit on Monday.

Sincerely,

well. as I understand it .
Lantus is a 12 hr insulin. As you continue using it, it builds up a storage depot ( shed) that does cover you for a short time after it is full so when
you miss a shot, it depletes the shed and you have to start over.
You probably haven't filled that shed yet ( each cat is different) . That's why it's important to hold the same dosage for a few days when you first start.

I'll let someone who knows it all better explain it.
I just know it's best when it's in 12 hr intervals.
If it didn't matter, I could sleep in an extra hour..... ;-)

The dosing should be as close to 12hrs apart as possible.... if you shot this morn at 730am, then the pm shot should be at 730pm.
Try to give NO food 2hrs prior to your shot times as you don't want your ps test to be food influenced.

You do not have a window of 2hrs before or after.... a shot at 530pm would have been too early and a shot at 930pm would have been way too late.

For treats, if you want something in which to hide meds, be very careful because if your cat bites into the meds in the treat, that treat may be shunned for all of the future. Many people use Pill Pockets for treats and covering in meds; the duck and pea flavored ones have no sweetener.

I used laughing cow cheese as it's sticky and my cats loved it... for treats and for covering pills.

If you want to know how a dose if working, test every 3 hrs after a shot.... 730am / 1030am / 130pm / 430pm / 730pm .... you will see how low the numbers are dropping mid cycle.
