Hello!

Me and Angel have been having an interesting time as of late. She's not been feeling well and has been off insulin for about 2 weeks since she's not eating and her sugar is not going high. She had only been on insulin for about a month before her appetite started to lessen.

We went to the vet yesterday and she had her first dose of mirtazapine 24hrs ago (dose is 1/4 of 7.5mg tablet every other day). It started working within an hour and she had more energy and ate some food on her own from the variety of choices I have had out for her.

I wasn't home during the day today, but I know she at least picked at her food throughout the day as her sugar was 213 about 15 minutes ago. I did her 100ml subq fluids just before that.

I am wondering what I should do in regards to her insulin tonight. Should I hold out until tomorrow morning and see what her sugar is then?

Any advice for dealing with ckd and diabetes would be great. I've been on Tanya's feline crf site almost constantly for the last couple of weeks...

Hi!
I do not give dosing advice but I am bumping this up for the wise ones--
I also use mirtz with my non diabetic who is CKD and it has helped him SO much! He is social and happy and eating regularly again:cat:

You may want to ask your vet about giving ondansetron/zofran for nausea. Many CKD cats have nausea and you want to make sure you don't give a appetite stimulate if they have nausea.

The only other medicine Angel is taking is famotidine, which is for stomach acid, so I'm not sure if that is exactly the same as for nausea...

That will reduce acid that can cause nausea--on Tanyas site I think they talk about it as well.
My cat had a fast heart rate on famotidine/pepcid so I switched to ondansetron Some cats do great with with pepcid tho.
it sounds like you have it under control :)

I didn't shoot last night. She is only just starting to eat again and I can't be home all day to monitor her, so I am a little unsure of how to get her back on track with insulin.

Her numbers were in the 70s/80s while she was off insulin. She wasn't eating enough.

I'm about to check her sugar now, will let you know.

Is she eating good this AM? If so, that would probably be fine. Maybe when you have time try to get a few mid cycle tests again to see how she's doing.

She should be ok you shot .5 on a similar PS in the past. What is she eating now? Leave some down for her to snack on while you're gone.

I'm just nervous since she only just started eating again yesterday. I'll feel better this weekend when I can be home to watch her.

She's eating Friskies dry food, one of the many things I bought while trying to get her to eat on her own. I will try to switch her back to the k/D diet prescribed by the vet once she has been eating better.

Wow, that's a pretty good number when eating dry food! It's important for her to eat something. Hopefully she'll get back on the KD soon, but if not maybe we can find something she likes that will also be good for her kidneys. As I said, leave a little of the dry out for her to munch on today.
