Hi, has anyone experienced their diabetic cat being bit by a dog? A German Short Hair dog chased & bit her in our house. He leaped a fence we had up when he saw her, it was terrifying. She is having trouble walking since the moment she got bit. Very wobbly hind end. She has 2 puncture wounds under her tail, on her butt. My vet has seen her & an ER vet. She is on antibiotic & pain med. She doesn't move around much, it's hard for her. This happened Friday night. She hid under bed all day Sat. & didn't use litter box, peed where she was laying. So I took to ER. No one did xray yet. My vet said if she doesn't improve at all we'll do one tmrw. She was put on Orabax Friday night & started Buprenex Sat. night. I think there was slight improvement this morning. She got up around 2 & drank some water. Then to my complete surprise jumped in bed. Don't know how she did that with such a painful wobbly back end. She jumped down awhile later. Around 6 I got pills & breakfast & insulin ready & she actually came into the kitchen. Laid there for awhile. It's heartbreaking because she pulls herself around while laying down, probably hurts to stand up. She then went down the steps to gameroom & has been laying there all day. I bring her food all throughout the day & night so she'll eat. She is eating some but not as much as usual. She's eating treats too with her pills hidden in them. She's drinking water. The vets said the puncture wounds aren't significantly deep but made that area swollen & hurts her to touch that area. They think her back end is super sore from the attack & will take awhile to heal. I just hope there's not more going on than that. Dr. also said that when human diabetics fall & bruise or are in an accident it takes awhile to get legs working again due to circulating sugar. (or something like that). All I do is cry thinking about what happened. She has been through SO much. This was traumatizing for everyone. I was so happy because I had her diabetes & kidneys diseases regulated perfectly. And now this. I can't decide if I need to put her through the stress of getting an xray or not. How do I know if she is just bruised & sore or if something else is going on. My vet said she probably wouldn't of been able to jump in bed if she had a fracture but you never know. Thank you

Hi,

Unfortunately I don't have any experience to share with you or advice to give but I just wanted to say that I'm really sorry to hear that your kitty was attacked. It must have been terribly frightening for all of you. I feel for you and for her. :bighug:

Your vet is right that diabetics can take a bit longer to heal than non-diabetics. I think its encouraging that she is eating and drinking and attempting to move around. I hope she will recover as quickly as possible. Saying a little prayer for her and for you and your family.

Keep checking site to make sure abscess are not forming. I remember my civvie had a bite we didn't know about. She started walking funny and the abscess was huge. It pulled on the skin which caused her to walk funny. Abscess broke on way to vet. It was right near her butt. Every time she pooped it would rip open. It took a long time to heal.

Many people (my clients) use the following--1 is for all soft tissue and 1 is for joint pain they work great together-easy to crush and no taste.
I would crush and give about 1/4 of each (can give at same time) 2-3 times a day. It helps modulate the immune system does not just mask pain. If get sleepy is most likely because is comfortable but you can cut it back if you want. Nothing in it to harm. Is homeotoxicology… I work with a vet that uses this all the time safely--I agree a x-ray would be helpful but I understand not wanting to put her thru it. Im so sorry :(

Would these be ok to use along with her kidney disease too?

Forgot to add that she is taking buprenorphine for pain right now. So maybe when she's done with that if she needs more pain med I could try this. I wonder if the arthritis relief is ok to use while she's on pain med & orabax anitibiotic. Thank you

How is your little one doing today? And how are you? :bighug:

EDITED TO ADD:

Didn't think of this last night, but I got bitten in the face by a dog when I was a child. As best I can remember, it was very painful immediately afterwards but the pain did subside after a few days.Obviously I wasn't as small as a cat, so none of my bones were affected. I do remember that I got an awful shock when it happened. I really feel for your little one. Sending her some scritches for comfort and reassurance. I hope she heals quickly.

Ouch, a bite in the face. That would have been petrifying. Not much has changed with Trina. If she does move she crouches her hind end down, it breaks my heart to see her walk wobbly like that. She ate pretty good & took her all her meds this morning. I made a bed on the floor with her last night & she came over to sleep next to me for awhile & gave me a few nose rubs. I hate seeing her struggle to walk. I cannot understand why her hind end is crouched down like that. Although right under her tail, above her butthole is where the bites are. The area is shaved & I'm sure still very sore & maybe swollen. So that probably feels very awkward to her. We are not sure if the dog could have cause muscle damage or what is going on. Since 2 nights ago she jumped up on a bed that was a good sign. But she really doesn't move around too much. The bites happened Friday night so I'm sure she's very sore from this horrible event. I just cry alot & stress myself out! But that's what happens to a lot of us when we're upset & worried about our babies. Thanks for checking in!

We have many animals on drugs like rimadyl (awful drug but does help pain) Dr H will put them on these as well and wean off the drug that has "complications" with other organs.
PM me and I will send you Dr H email if you would like a Drs opinion--it is OVC --I sell tons of it for my seniors at my grooming salon --very safe even little babies (human can take it)

It's heart-rending to see seeing anything wrong with our little ones. :( You and Trina have a wonderful relationship with each other - so much love.

Ow! Must be so sore for her going to the litter box. (((Trina)))

Sending more healing vibes. Have you thought more about the X-ray?

I think they're just high enough that it's not too painful. And they're not real deep wounds. I watched her in her litterbox today & she seemed ok. Thank goodness!!! When she went to her box earlier today it seemed like she was walking a little bit better. I actually felt a little relief so I'm holding off on the x-ray. She's been laying in the game room most of the day. I'm giving her pain meds every 12 hrs. so she's a sleepy little girl.

Sleeping is good it will help the healing. Definitely want her to be comfortable and it really stinks that she and you are going thru this… I am glad she is sleeping well and sounds like she is feeling better :cat:

I know this is stressful but you sound very dedicated to your kitty and clearly have all your bases covered between the antibiotic and the bupro. Diabetics get infections easier; so I would keep an eye out for anything that looks weird, like puss or the area changing color.
Fingers and paws crossed for a quick recovery! Sending hugs!

Also, I think the X-ray would be a good idea if her walking hasn't improved by Friday. My kitty had a "crash landing" once and blew out some tendons in his knee. It didn't show up on the x-ray but at least we knew he didn't have any broken bones. It's very hard to see them wobbly; so I hope she feels better soon!

I hope your kitty recovered from his crash landing! yikes! I'm still driving myself nuts over the x-ray! She came up & down a flight of stairs twice today. She is moving around a little more but still resting a lot too. Her hind end is still a little wobbly & a little crouched but not as crouched as before. It just doesn't look right though when she walks. I wish I knew if it was just soreness. I don't think anything is broken but it seems like muscles or tendons might be strained or something. Or maybe she's bruised. I'm sure she feels really weird with that area shaved, punctured, scabbed & swollen right under her tail. Sometimes she'll kind of put her butt in the air for a minute when she's laying. I just can't stand to see her not walking right. But it is a little bit better.

But it is a little bit better.
Hope it gets a lot better soon! Please keep us posted! The bupro is usually good for pain (if it's the oral, make sure it goes in the cheek pouch and isn't immediately swallowed so that it's absorbed properly); so it might just feel weird like you said.
