Have had some suggestions that our insulin vial may be a problem. So I squirted a little onto some kitchen paper and yes there IS an odor, nothing really rank or horrible - but it's very hard to describe... so I was wondering if ANY odor at ALL, is, on its own, an indication that it's gone south?

Thanks for any guidance and sorry for the newbie dumb questions (I HAVE checked the stickies - but if the answer is there I couldn't find it...!)

    Cheers,
    Perry

Lantus has an antiseptic-like order. Some people say it smells like Band-Aids.

Yes, it stinks. Smells like....i don't know....chemically, medicinal, dry-cleanery? I don't know how to describe it either but I know if Punk gets a whiff of it, she runs.

Is the lantus cloudy or are there little bits floating around in it? How old is it? Have you considered the cartridges or pens?

ETA: BAND AIDS! THAT'S IT! PSYCHOTICALLY STRONG BAND AIDS!

I always thought "hospital" when I smelled it, but you all are right, it IS Band-Aids.

The characteristic Lantus "smell" is your friend. It can let you know if you've given a "fur shot"!! Always sniff and feel the spot where you gave the shot after shooting. If you smell Lantus and feel "wet" fur, it's likely that a fur shot or partial fur shot was given. DO NOT SHOOT AGAIN! Just wait until the next 12-hour cycle and shoot the normal dose.
Welcome, Perry and Sooty, to Lantus Land!

Burning tires? I like the band aids one, smells medicinal to me & it is a strong odor.
Vial usually lasts 28 days, more if you are lucky!--Once had a pen for 40 days--You'll know it's done when the cat's numbers go up!!
If the vial has any floaties in it it is no good...JUst bought lantus solostar pens from a canada pharmacy for $97.00 which is dirt cheap and will be shipped in ice pack!
I like them the best..needs prescription.

It stinks!!!!! Levemir stinks too. I would decribe it as burnt rubber, but actually the smell is due to one of it's inactive ingredients 2.7 mg m-cresol so that's what it really smells like cresol (the stuff they paint telephone poles with, it contains tar)

I was just going to say it smells like bandaids with a kick! Glad I am not the only one who thinks that!
