when is the best time to do a bg on precious?before she eats or after?and how many times a day should i check her bg?

We always like to test immediately before feeding...and we take their food up for the 2 hours prior to that so the number we get isn't influenced by food.

After that, we like to see at least one test somewhere mid-cycle on the AM cycle (like about +5 to +7) and then at least a "before bed" test on the PM cycle.
(+5 to +7 is 5 to 7 hours after the shot)

What insulin are you using? That can make a difference on when to feed/shoot

It would be really helpful if you'd add some information to your signature so we don't have to keep asking the same questions. If you look under most of our comments, you'll see that we all have that information there.

Things like your name/cats name, age, date of diagnosis, type of insulin, type of meter, what kind of food you're feeding and if she has any other health problems

You should always test before giving insulin. The order is: test, feed, shoot.

Unless I'm doing a curve, which is about every 3 months, give or take, I only test right before feeding. If Goof is acting oddly, I'll test then just to make sure. I feed only twice a day, except for a snack of plain tuna around mid day between am and pm feedings.

If you could add the info that Chris suggested to your signature, it'd help us out a lot. It makes it much easier to give advice when we have this info. On

Hi!!
The first thing I learned in the forum is the more data you have available the better the experienced advice givers are able to help you with your kitty-I know it seems like a lot but once you have the basics included in you signature you can add the testing numbers each day-
This way the forum will help you make the best decisions for your kitty. Your doing great and so glad you are able to test!!:cat:

Most all of here would never shoot without a test to be sure you have a shootable number... the data in between helps you learn how kitty responds to the insulin so when you start having low pre shots the experts can guide you safely... (where the mid cycle numbers come in)

For example my cat has his nadir (lowest number) about 2.5-4 hours after injection. So I can pretty safely runs errands etc. after I test +2 or +3 if he is in safe numbers.
Some have nadir at +6 some at +10
this is the data that will become very helpful-
When I first joined I was told to try to look at the spreadsheet like a puzzle and tests at different times--like fill in the blank on different days so the cycle can be analyzed.
Your doing great and this will all be second nature once you get into the groove:bighug:
