I have a box of syringes - I've had them for a couple of years, they were used for one of our other cats for some med I can't remember. They're Relion Insulin syringes and it says on the box "for 30 units or less (U-100 Insulin only) 30 gauge, 5/16 Inch (8mm) needle" then under that "30 gauge 0.3 cc" - are these actually the right kind of U100 syringes I could be using? They have an orange cap. If they are the right kind, I'd love to know. I'm interested in lowering Sam's dose a tiny bit and these would certainly help.

those are perfecto!

that is, i assume you want to use u40 insulin in the u100 syringe and know about the conversion to do so?

Yes, I have u40 Prozinc. It seems strange to me that the syringes only go to 30. I thought they'd go to 100 (U100 = 100 marks on the syringe in my mind.) I've seen the conversion chart. I have some trepidation about using these, but as long as they're the right ones and I follow the chart, I should be okay, right? I'll probably start tomorrow since Sam already had his pm shot.

the size, 0.3cc, determines what the capacity is. so the 0.3 or you might see it as 3/10cc means the syringe will go to 30. if you had 0.5cc or 1/2cc syringes, they'd go to 50, etc.....

make sure you understand the chart and where you're drawing to on the syringe and you should be fine. the overdoses i've seen over the years often are because people weren't clear on where they were supposed to draw to, for various reasons.

fwiw, i long ago wrote out the conversion and to this day still have it stuck to the file cabinet next to my desk at home. and i don't even use pzi anymore. LOL!! it's still handy to have there though, for answering questions. also, to print out the whole big chart that you find online, can be too much if you ask me. i just wrote out up to like 5 units was all on my chart i made as i figured we'd never get that high anyway. big and bold and easy to see too.

I printed it out and know that if I want to give 1.8 of the U40, I should be drawing to 4.5 on the U100 syringe. Baring some strange AMPS, that's what I'm giving Sam in the morning.
