Hello! My cat has been prescribed Denamarin for liver support. We cannot get it in her whole (we've tried pushing it down her throat and breaking it up in her food, but she won't eat it). I was wondering if I could possibly dissolve it in some water and she can drink that (I'm thinking that I can't, because I've heard that it's time-released or something like that). Thank you!

Hello, and welcome!

Please do not push anything down your cat's throat - it's dangerous for the cat. Especially the whole pill. Please.

Denamarin might be unpleasant taste-wise for your cat so perhaps some tricks might be helpful. What if to sprinkle really stinky cheese - like good Parmesan, grated on top of the food that contains finely chopped, crashed to powered Denamarin?

Dissolving in water might not work beacuse cats naturally have very low thirst drive. Even if your kitty will drink some, there will never be guarantees she got her dose in full.

My bet would be on the crashing to fine powder (please check, and then double check the dosage needed) the dose you need and mix it with your cat's favorite food.

You can also use pill-pockets or other techniques about which I am sure others on this Board will be happy to share with you. Please hold on until you hear more opinion on the matter. The most important thou - do not force whole pill down your cat's throat. It is dangerous.

Please keep posting your questions or concerns here. Oh, and finally - WELCOME to you and you kitty! :bighug:

We are here to help!

PS. It might be easier t be give meaningful/practical advise if you can share some details about your cat: How old is s/he and what is the name? What is the diagnose? Is s/he on insulin! What type/dose and how often? What does she eat and how often? There will be more questions the only purpose of which is to assist you and your kitty better on the road to healing/recovery. :bighug:

You're correct. Denamarin should not be crushed, cut up, or dissolved in water.

From the the manufacturer's web site:

"For optimal absorption, tablets should be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before feeding, as the presence of food decreases the absorption of S-Adenosylmethionine. For those owners who have difficulty administering tablets to their pets, Denamarin tablet(s) may be disguised in a small bite of food. Studies have shown that, in many cases, tablets or capsules given as a "dry swallow" do not pass into the stomach in cats but may become lodged in the esophagus. It is recommended for pet owners to administer 3-6 cc of water immediately following any tablet administration to speed passage of the tablet into the stomach.1, 2 Denamarin for Cats and Small Dogs tablets are ideal for cats because of their small size. If the pet is to receive more than one tablet daily, the total number of tablets may be divided between morning and evening for ease of administration."

Have you tried hiding the pill in a small piece of a pill pocket or piece of meat or cheese or treat? Try faking kitty out by tossing her a piece or two of one of the above and then tossing the one with the pill in it. Followed by another couple of "treats". She may not even notice the pill. :D
