Hello,

I am still very new to the diabetes world and am seeking some direction. please see Jaxon's SS in my link. I think that his dose may be too high and increased too quickly from 2u to 3u twice daily. I feed wet food for main meals at 8am and 8pm prior to injecting. I also have just started giving Jaxon a snack around the time of his lowest bgl.

In the last couple of days i have held the evening dose on one occasion, the next am he was very high. two days after that i gave 1u rather then his 3 and had a similar effect although the numbers were better.

tonight i am considering to give 2 u even though his bgl is in the normal range.

any thoughts would be great.

If he was mine I would not shoot tonight unless he comes up greatly before his shot time and here is the reasoning he was still dropping after eating at +8. I think even at 2u it is going to be too high..Lantus needs to be raised slowly in .25u increments not whole units at a time...I would take him back to 1u twice a day hold for a week let him settle then run a curve and adjust from there. If he needs more than that 1u then only take him up to 1.25 or 1.5 at max again hold and let settle, run curve (testing every 2 hours between shots) and adjust again if needed.

Hello and thank you,

his current level is 5.8 or 104 at time of next dose, i will hold off tonight on his dose. Should i reset to 1u twice a day tomorrow and start increasing 0.25u for a week and go from there? curving every week and adjusting by 0.25 until all of his bgl are in normal range? my vet doesnt seem to think that Jaxon needs a decrease but i do, it just doesnt feel right to me...

You gut is right on!!! :-D The idea is to find a dose that you can shoot every 12 hours without him dipping too low and right now he is going too low..With someone just starting out we say not to give insulin unless they are over 200 at shot time. Over on the TR group there are excellent stickies on how to adjust the dose based on the curves. When in doubt post here or on health and someone will help you out.

This forum isn't terribly busy but either the TR group or Health always has someone around...I'm not here much anymore since my girl went off Lantus and on to Levemir but I do try to check in a couple times a day at least.
