First, if you haven't read Dillon's blog on DCIN, please read it here: http://fdmb-cin.blogspot.com/2012/05/dillon-10-years-young-russian-blue.html. He is my sweet, darling foster kitty but he really needs a furever home.

I hope I don't jinx this, but I took Dillon into emergency foster care this week and after a diet change from dry W/D, and 2 days of insulin, he has been too low to shoot.

But I'm having issues with him and eating. He ate Fancy Feast classic chicken and liver and chicken the first 2 days and then stopped. The I tried a fish flavor and he ate it readily enough but then had bad liquipoo and vomiting white foam. I'm laying off of fish in case he should have an allergy. I switched to Fancy Feast Chunky Chicken which he likes because he likes to eat the chunks of food. I think they may remind him of the size and shape of his dry food. Unlike most cats, he leaves the pate filler behind and only eats the chunks.

But FF Chunky Chicken has wheat gluten in it and I'd like to find him a chunky stye food that does not have wheat gluten. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

How about trying raw food - like Nature's Variety or Stella & Chewy's - Stellas is a freeze dried that can be served dry or with added water - if he is looking for crunch this might be a good option. And yes, it is a bit pricey.

Laura, Wellness makes a pouch food called Healthy Indulgence which has the chunks and gravy that some cats prefer. It has potato starch in it and some vegetables, but should be fairly low carb. My cats love it.

Great to hear Dillon is responding so well to treatment!

 I knew the foster was YOU! I sent you a message on FB awhile ago. You know my weakness for smokey grey kitties! I want him but not sure my group would go for it & my last, little Petunia just has to be in charge. I knew I should have sent her to Kim!

Hillary - Good thought, I'd tried leaving Hadley and Molly's homemade raw food down for him but he didn't go for it. I do have some Stella & Chewey's freeze dried raw in the cupboard, I could try that. As I recall it's about 13% carbs.

Vicky - Thanks for the tip. I picked up some Healthy Indulgence Chicken from the store tonight and I'll have to pick out the carrots, none of my cats eat them, and give it a try.

Barbara - I just saw your FB messages and yes, guilty as charged, I have Dillon and he's an absolute dream of a kitty, I'm more than half in love. But I'm more than willing to send him onward and upward to his furever home. You and I both have the smokey grey weakness in our blood. I'd almost offer to trade him for Petunia but I've already got 2 cats fighting to rule the roost. Bagheera never got the memo that he's a foster and he's trying to take over the world and Harley will have none of it. Dillon, Princess and Molly just try to keep out of their way!

Laura,
Not sure about carb content but if it's just plain chicken.... I had a civvy (Mullet) with a tooth problem and I had to feed him alternate (non canned cat food) food for a few days a couple months ago. He had a broken tooth that had created a hole in his tongue, but anyway, I went with baby food meat for a couple of days and tried canned tuna mashed up. I also tried canned chicken breast in water, which was very chunky. I mashed his up and he loved it. But the ingredients on the can said "chicken breast, water" and that was it. Maybe that would work, un-mashed? Chicken breast would be very low-carb, right?

Laura,

Supposedly, the Stella & Chewy's Freeze Dried Raw are around 2% (as fed). I don't know how that translates to % KCal, especially when moisture is at 5% and they didn't supply an ash value. I sure hope it's not 13% carbs KCal, as I've been feeding this overly expensive food to my cat and would hate to think I'm not only wasting $$$$$, but compromising his low-carb diet!

Good luck on your quest for foods that entice Dillon to eat. In the meantime, have you tried sprinkling his canned food with parmesan? I swear Pumbaa would eat doggie-doo-doo if I sprinkled parmesan cheese on it. *LOL* There's also something called FortiFlora which is used to coat dry cat food (this info is from the catinfo.org website) and can be sprinkled on their wet food to entice them to eat.
