I gave my cat her first insulin dose today but a few minutes after she seemed a slightly more lethargic and twitchy - still up and about but just not fully herself yet. I got nervous and checked her BG again and it was 236 so it's not hypo, is it normal for cats to be a bit off after their very first shot? Probably just being paranoid but wanted to check!

I think you might be overanalyzing but definitely keep an eye on her. My guy was on ProZinc for a little bit and I ended up switching because he was just not himself.

Good job giving first shot!

Thank you :) I definitely need to relax and stop checking on her every five seconds!! She seems okay now, maybe she was weirded out by the feeling of the shot or something.

When our second sugar cat was diagnosed it was just an inconvenience but I've never forgotten that first week. Is he dead? What's he doing now?
I've done it all, my 23 year old fell from the third floor window into a snow bank, the cat that swallowed a staple, twice locked cats out of the house overnight. Diabetes is harder on the owner than the cat, we're all a little crazy yes?

I remember being so shocked learning that many members get up at 3AM every night to do a mid-day blood test. That sleep deprivation is not going to happen here, ever. Three seconds after my head hits the pillow and I'm out. I'd need to hear "The house is on fire, the cat's on fire, aliens stole the lawn" before action is taken. That's after a coffee of course, the fire extinguisher is right below the coffee pods. And the aliens? Just those stupid Rockhopper Penguins from down the street.

Some cats can get a little lethargic when they first start treatment as their little bodies adjust to the arrival of the new insulin but typically that response should wear off after a few days. (Great that you're home testing and a very smart move on your part to do a spot-check to make sure her BG was OK.)

I'd suggest continuing to keep a close eye on her and talk to your vet about any concerns.

By way of general information, while Saoirse was on Lantus she would typically be a little sleepy for an hour or so after her insulin injections but then she'd perk up again as soon as the dose kicked in (onset).

As Melissa (FrostD) comments above, sometimes a particular insulin does not agree with a particular cat in which case switching to another insulin might be indicated. (Saoirse didn't do well on Caninsulin - lethargic for 9-10 hours out of every cycle - but she did great after the switch to Lantus.)

It can be helpful to record general observations in the Remarks column of your spreadsheet: makes it easier to spot any emerging patterns, and it's a great resource to refer to when consulting with your vet.
