Hello,
I’m going to apologize in advance for my obnoxiously long post.

I’m really struggling here. I feel so sad for my furbaby, as I don’t feel like he’s improving. He was diagnosed at the end of December. I just want to the best for him and make sure he’s comfortable and content but more importantly, healthy. For starters, checking his levels is hit or miss. I either have to poke him once or 5 times. My hands are destroyed lol I’m also upset because every time I go near him, he runs. It’s like, “Great, my cat hates me.” He thinks I’m gonna poke at him. Anyway, I try very hard to check his levels every 3 or 4 hours. It’s very hard with him not cooperating (understandably so) and my work schedule. I do always check it first thing in the morning though. It’s usually in the high 300’s to mid 400’s. He’s on 1 unit of Vetsulin twice a day. Is there a specific time I should check his levels besides the morning and before his night dose?

Another thing I’m struggling with is, he’s ALWAYS hungry. Before getting diagnosed, he was free fed with Meow Mix. His vet suggested taking him off of the dry food and start him on low carb wet food. So, he gets a can of Fancy Feast Paté in the morning before his insulin and then another can 12 hours later before his evening dose, with no feedings in between. His vet suggested this until his levels get stable. But he’s so hungry. I don’t think 2 cans of 3 Oz wet food is enough. He paces around between meals and constantly goes to his food bowl He doesn’t sleep a lot at night either. I would know because I’m that crazy furmom always checking on him ‍♀️ Again, paces around. Goes to his food bowl. He can’t wait for breakfast and dinner time. He also looks thinner

And lastly, his stool has changed significantly since I changed his diet. He was having bigger and daily bowel movements when he was on the Meow Mix. Now, he goes very little almost every day. Sometimes, he skips a day. But it’s not a lot and it seems like he’s constipated because it’s looks like it may have been hard for him to pass.

Oh, and one more thing, this may sound silly to bring up but my cat doesn’t purr anymore. Like, ever. He always use to purr every time I pet him or when he kneads on his very blanket. Not anymore. He barely meows too. He’s changed so much since this whole thing started.

Any words of advice and feedback are welcome, pretty please and thank you!

Hi, don't apologize the more information we get, the better we can help. It must be heartbreaking to not have him purr.

Hometesting is hard when starting out, don't be so hard on yourself it does get easier. Do you give your cat treats when you test, that really helps.

Have you seen the link on hometesting. There may be something helpful there:

How much does your cat weight, is he getting enough calories? I am not very familiar with Vetsulin. But with other insulins it is okay and actually recommended to feed small snacks throughout the day. Hopefully someone with more experience with Vetsulin will advise you in that.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I see Chris has given you the link to hometesting hints. Do you know what size lancets you are using?
In the beginning you need size 26 or 28 gauge so if you don’t have those, I would go out and buy some. You will find it easier to get blood with those sizes.
Also are you giving your kitty a treat every time you test, whether you are successful or not?
And try warming the ear before you try getting blood.

I don’t know why so many vet say to only feed twice a day when they are getting insulin. Diabetic cats are almost always hungry in the beginning and will be much happier and more settled with a main meal before the dose and then a couple of snacks around +2 and +4 during every cycle. If he is still hungry and he is still thin, you can give him another snack each cycle…..just don’t feed foe the 2 hours preshot as we don’t want the preshot abG to be food influenced.
If you have to go out to work I would look into getting an automatic timed feeder and using that for the snacks.
As you are using vetsulin you need to feed your kitty 30 minutes before the shot.
So the routine for vetsulin is….test the BG, feed your kitty. Wait 30 minutes….then give the dose.
Then try and get another test in around +4 or +5 each cycle if you can.

It would be helpful if you could fill out your signature please, I’ll provide the link, and also if you could set up our spreadsheet we will be able to help you with dosing and lots of advice.
Also do you have a hypo kit set up? If not I would really recommend you do so asap.

H
is bowel motions have probably changed with the change of food. If you think he is constipated try putting a little plain boiled pumpkin with nothing else added (about 1/2 teaspoon ) in with his meals.
I am sure he will start purring again once things settle down and he starts to get a bit more food.
Keep asking questions, we are happy to help.
