Need help and advice regarding diet for these two food thieves
Tigger my 15 year old that's been on Lantus 2units for a long time, eats Fancy feast pate with occasional flaked, has always been free fed, sugars are pretty stable, occasionally 350+ when he gets into the dog food. His last fructosamine 394.
Slasher our new kitty, adopted from my vet, had been there 2 months after owner relinquished do to high medical bills. He had UTI, blood and bacteria in urine that was not properly treated, feel that his elevated kidney chemicals were secondary to this. After intensive treatment his kidney function is now normal, I'm sorry I do not have all of his labs yet.
The vet wants him on KD wet and supplemented with CK dry.
If I try to feed FD cat 2 times a day he's sugars will drop (65), It is almost impossible to keep either out of the others food. If I I put Slasher in another room he cries most of the night. Both are on the thin side. I want all involved to be happy and healthy and me to remain sane. The dog has been a free feeder on dry, I have been putting his up and trying to keep both cats out of it( partial sucess)
Is anyone aware of a food that would work for both. Wysong Canned is the best compromise I can find.

Does anyone have any suggestions or insight what I can do for these two

Just to clarify, Tigger doesn't have CKD but Slasher's kidney values had deteriorated due to a UTI but are normal now?

Many vets jump to "prescription" food even when there's really no need – both with diabetes and CKD. The only time a cat might need K/D is when they're in stage 4 or end stage CKD. Otherwise, you want to feed foods that are both low carb (for the diabetes) and low phosphorus (for the CKD). It used to be thought that a low protein diet is beneficial for cats with kidney disease but newer research shows that it's much more important to restrict phosphorus. That restricting protein at low levels of CKD just leads to muscle wasting.

Look into canned foods by Weruva. They have a large variety of flavours that are both low carb and low phosphorus. And they put their nutritional information on their website for every single one!

Right Tigger diabetic with good kidney numbers on last labs. Slasher was put on kd after hospitalization, had uti and stuvite stones that were not fully treated, this lead to acute kidney failure. Kidney function numbers are now in normal ranges. To me it looks more like and acute kidney injury rather than any CKD. There is no info on kidney function loss .The previous owner surrendered him to vet and the vet kept him for 6+ weeks, I just adopted. Slasher has not had any diabetic issues and is only a year old. I getting the same feeling you expressed on KD diet that it is over kill and inappropriate response.
I have been looking on the site Tayna's kidney disease site. I believe the Wysong I ask about is probable inappropriate due to lack of vitamins/min and supplements. I will look at Weruva and see if I can't find something that will work for both.
Thanks for the advice.

You are correct about the Wysong. It's not a nutritionally complete food. You're also right in that there's a difference between an acute kidney injury (AKI) vs chronic kidney disease.
